"In the following selections, there are examples from among the thousands of titles on the Civil War that convey more than just facts. Some are histories, while others are memoirs and recollections. This list includes general reading that would be important to a person who had minimal knowledge of the American Civil War and wanted to open a window into the events and the people who lived during the period of 1861-65. It's scary how many of those books are in my library at home.

Not at all what I would consider essential or comprehensive.

More interesting what is left out. Shelby foote's work, Carl Sanburg's series, Grant's memoirs, The Official records, The Photographic history of the war, Lee's Lieutenants, The various military manuals, etc. Not a very good list.

I started out with The Golden Book of the Civil War. From there I graduated straight to Lee's Lieutenants and Battles & Leaders of the Civil War and a number of biographies, all of which are missing from that list. If a parent was looking for a good introduction to the Civil War for a kid today, I would probably suggest Battle Maps of the Civil War which has the same battle maps I enjoyed from The Golden Book.

….. No one will live long enough to read all the books written about the ACW, even just the good ones.
