"This question gets asked a lot and it's usually answered in sarcasm and vagaries. So, today I thought I would put an actual value to the question of how expensive is Warhammer 40K. This information will inevitably vary army to army, but the goal is to give a basic foundation of cost for Warhammer 40K based on things you will be required to buy for a game. A bit of a disclaimer here. Prices can fluctuate quite a bit from those listed if you're buying from a place like eBay, Amazon, or some online retailer in general. A nice article. I didn't agree on all of his costs, but it's terribly hard to get a fix on average costs, especially paints. I would like to see a similar effort on, say, a Bolt Action army and maybe a Napoleonic or ACW army. |

I notice, however, the article doesn't mention the deliberate planned obsolescence of units or even entire armies, from time to time. Of course one can always play older versions at the club, but tournament play requires regular updating of armies (and buying new versions not only of the rules and one's own army codex but those of one's opponents as well if you want to be competitive). I may own fifteen different Napoleonics rules but I only need one Pavlovski Grenadiers – they've been with me since the 80s and I intend that they should be buried with me, like a terracotta army… |
