Could somebody give me a quick breakdown on the organizational structure of a 40k Chaos legion (Black legion, Alpha or Iron Warriors). Is a legion like a US division, brigade, battalion or regiment or something completely different. I hear "companies" being used which would be smaller units. Any help / examples would be appreciated.

Most of what you want to know: link

Some Legions were the size of corps or even armies.

From what my memory serves me, current Chaos armies fight in groups of (sometimes competing) Warbands.

A charasmatic Warlord is able to pull together various Warbands into a piratical or raiding force. In their greatest form a Warlord can pull together enough Warbands into a Crusade or major invasion.

If you read the orders of battle for the Black Crusades, the varying CSM forces are assembled into Warbands or Battalions.

Point being, I don't think there is much uniformity to them.

Best of all, if you are running a Chaos undivided force then you can include a diverse collection of units from across the whole spectrum.
