I should have bought another one, or two of these, since they're so cheap, for multiple scales.

Found a floor mat with a small, tightly woven pattern that is a bit random, and very evocative of cobblestone roads at the local Dollar Tree. It's a longish, mat, with some type of greeting in white print on it.

Saw an ad on FB for getting rid of stuff like that, so I'm going to try that, but even if that doesn't work, the areas around the greeting are still substantial enough to make this a great bargain. Theoretically, WD-40 will do the job. Got to find some to test it out.

Looks like it'll work great for 1/144th and 1/100th scale, and possibly even larger ones as well, if you aren't too picky.

Sorry, no pics to post currently.

I'd just gesso prime over it before painting. With WD-40, you'd have to clean off all the greasy residue that paint won't stick to… ;-)

Since it's fabric, and a decent, realistic color already, there's no need to paint it.

Already, nicely modeled with "realistic" earth tones.

One of these?

Similar to those, but slightly different.

The ones I got say, "This is our happy place" in white print, and they're two times as long as wide, and light grayish/tan in color. The weave is quite tight, with small squares representing cobblestones that are about 1mm in diameter, so about 6" in 1/144th scale, and 4" in 1/100th scale.

There are many others in darker gray colors, and the weave isn't quite the same (not quite as tight). Still, those might work for cobblestone or rough pavement, especially when viewed at a distance.

Colors of even the above vary slightly from rug to rug.

I went back and got another one, which I'm going to trim slightly, but use as the base for a large village, instead of cutting into strips for roads. I might add on some thin, plastic card sidewalks too, beneath the buildings, but on top of the rug, just for fun, and to enhance the overall look a bit.

Good hunting.

1mm – 2mm, or so, "stones".
