A new album with a catalogue of figures 'in reserve' for some time.

Another foray with the camera will bring a different army to the fore, but these at least are being resurrected for now as I take a rest from detail driven French forces.

As explained in decsriptions, not my painting but I'm using 'nostalgia' units as made by the originator.

Yes they've got some 'condition' issues with poor casting, brittle sabres and flash all over the place, and a few missing critical pieces like enough command. However clean up metal first and paiting goes easier. If I break something I canusually repair again with pins, CA and Milliput.

As I said I'm taking a light touch approach to refurbing painted units.

The Prussian Kurassier (in Kollet !?!) are gloss white- lucky I still have a tin- and some of their paint flaked off after some flexed arms and heads to remove extreme dimensions. Gilder loved his 'flash' charging cav a lot!

A bit of shading round belts and a bit more colour on horses etc.
However taking a break from extremely detailed (ie piping and gold bits) French giving my eyes a rest, before I get back to those.

And progress of sorts- hmm seems Allies fans outnumber the others judging by visitor numbers… anyway…

Here's the first regiment out of the Allies barracks for quite some time: East Prussian Kurassier 1813.
In 1970's style, including basing, the 'light touch' refurbishment evolved over 2 weeks.
I've stuck with the basics as described above. I haven't yet decided whether to apply a touch of matt spray to 'seal' them or not.
Follow the trail of pix… one earlier is simply 'in the box'.

In addition, a 3/4 painted unit for 1805 that had been similarly sidelined was completed back in lockdown time. A non-technical separation from the details of 'the other side' I've been painting so mush.

Another, tiny, unit that's been completed (except for spraying varnish- and rain has put paid to that idea today)- some frivolous cossacks I picked up with some other original Hinchliffe figures I needed.

Just 3 of them as the red guy has been house-bound for a decade, now free to roam the steppes in search of Frenchmen to harry along. These are primarily for my 1805 though.
I've given two of them a slightly more 'formal' uniform appearance in green faced red.

Seems they were quite a formidable regiment, winning a St.Georges colour for some action in 1805 campaign (awarded '06).

In a better to than not, a review of 'Allies' for 1805 showed that I had overestimated the amount of work needed to field another body.

Hence the -KK IR #38 Wurttemberg:

The battalion completed from above to 'all but'- just waiting for dry sunny days to spray varnish to completion, probably waiting for a couple of other units or vignettes to do so.

Well you are gonna laff…
Taking the 'light approach' these days (lots of Woodland Scenics flock on previous commissions) I still:

glue them down with PVA first day,

basing second day with Polyfilla (a wallboard repair/ sealer compound), using an xacto thin knife blade,

apply while still wet a scattering of 'earth' colour- actually incense ash,

apply some 'greenery' and/ or sand- these days left overs from Heki static grass, pumice stones and a trickle of the Woodland Scenics flock.

next day (allowing drying time) I may repeat/ repair the last two steps.

final is spray matt varnish overall, taking care to hit the bases as well to lock in the scenics.

Latter hasn't been done with these kaiserliks yet.

So the 'white' you see is the actual filler material. Completely covering it doesn't seem as effective. And using incense ash? Smells good too!
No really, it's just a good colour, not dirt, not mud nor stone, neutral and very very fine of course, so no 'detail' which I apply with other scenics as I desire.

I should note that as well as the ash, the actual 'red' earth visible is a fine blend, from possibly WS or unknown maker. It was a packet that was purchased in the 70's and long gone to the unknown world.

While figure painting continues including some 'resurrection' work, progress has slowed as the number of 'work-in-progress' projects and enforced 'stand-downs' escalates.

Update 2021 !
All the way from August to here, finally a grouping of units rolling off the conveyor of progress- seems like everyone has been exhausted by too much action all year?

My excuse is really I expanded to too many projects at once, breaking my French 'cycle' a bit and didn't reach the level of completion for anything. So I end up with 50+ projects on plans, plus on hand models of a lot of incidentals creeping along the way as well.

First up today- a going away shot(or are they just scouting some new booty) of the Sysoev-3 Polk finally varnished!

One of those 'side projects', small in size and achievable in a shorter time- the Austrian Pioneer 'korps'.

A battalion at least was deployed at Austerlitz- 3 companies were attached to Kienmayers Avant-Garde of the First Column (Dokhturov)- tasked with crossing and securing the village of Telnitz in the Southerly most extreme of the proposed battle line.

And rather than use a separate command figure/ base for the 'Engineer' component, I decided to make him integral with the unit.

Whilst not 100% accurate for 1805 uniforms, these Wargames Foundry 'landwehr' are suitable stand-ins with the uniform and corse-hut style hat. Because the figures were available and such a small unit, I've done them in less than a month- they've just waited another until varnishing and 'tagging'.

I've designated them '#1' simply because they're in the formation that I'm completing first of the K-K army.

There's little commentary on their presence and actions, however I'd welcome any details of injuries or losses to the unit to confirm they assisted with the removal of the 3eme de ligne from the village and environs. In truth after capturing the village, losing it once to Davouts counter-attack, also repulsed, the formation stood by it's orders to wait, and wait, till the other Russian columns completed their assigned roles. (The waiting lasted all day…)

Uniforms were deliberately varied, so differing shades of 'white' and linen appear in both coats and breeches.

As the Austrian forces were distributed amongst the three formations of the first, fourth and fifth columns I have been building the army equally across the first two mainly to date.

One more unit, or strictly two of necessary support troops- the horse artillery.

These 'Cavaleriebatterien' are the two horse batteries that formed part of Kienmayers Avant-Garde division, combining with several full and some part horse regiments and Carnevilles Grenzer brigade.

The broken gun (axle) was a reult of the mould cleaning process, and it occured to me that a damaged gun was rarely seen in battles, so I'd keep it the way it evolved.

Back to 1805

I've completed GM Jurcziks command base who has sat around for a decade since my last major foray with the 1805 Allied army.

No more stuffing around with figures or basing, but will have to wait for a really low humisity day before I take to the matt spray to seal it all.

The GM has his staff officer with him, a Flugel Adjutant while discssing battlefield affairs with a regimental officer. Nearby are two soldiers, one injured, from the Wüttemberg Infantry Regt. #38 in his brigade.

I've adoped this method to more easily identify commanders at all levels with their troops.

Slow progress in a variety of areas, but figured I'd get a 'new' unit out as it is a single battalion and I'd partly 'sample' experimented with colours and shades etc. earlier in the year.

So herewith an all but completed 3rd/ 7th Jaeger Regiment- a Wargames Foundry/CRM unit in the unique and shortlived Russian tophat style. (Awaiting matt spray protection).

Another angle, showing the guy hiding amongst the bushes of a quasi 'Winter' scene. And yes, he should be in a green greatcoat, but I quite enjoy the 'variety' and he's the only greatcoated figure they supply (wondering why?). Two NCOs included in unit, the pistol-guy was a standard bearer (except jaeger didn't have standards at this time!).

These Russians advanced in support of the Grenzers and did finally drive the 3eme de Ligne from Tellnitz, only in turn 15 minutes later to be suprised and routed by the sudden bayonet charge of the 108eme (Davouts corps) barrelling along the [only] main street of Tellnitz!

Frantic times!

Russians seem fine to me, I have 1812 Russians in forage cap

Another Allied nations unit of heritgae status, this time the Russian Kharkov Dragoons of 1813 completed with a couple of figures, and rebased to two figures/ 12 per unit.

Not a major addition to the army but at least another complete unit out of the storage box.
As the original owner painted nearly 50 figures all for the same regiment next steps will include a more extensive colour change, which I unfortunately started with loose figures in a too dark green.

A few touch-ups are required on the officers and standard itself…
