Were the gun carriages painted or plain wood during WotR? Thoughts? Thanks!

Your guess is as good as mine!

Obviously, they were red for Lancaster and white for York. :)

While not exactly answering your question, I just learned that Mons Meg (built in 1449) was originally painted in red lead (cost 30 shillings in 1539). On the other hand, when I Googled "medieval cannon period art", all the period illustrations showed brown carriages. I would, however, assume at least linseed oil or other treatment to keep the water out, wouldn't you think?

Well, using BLO (boiled linseed oil) as a treatment for wood furniture on firearms is a grand old English tradition.

Interesting about Mons Meg, a couple of centuries later the New Model Army were painting gun carriages a 'fair ledd' colour.
