"In his new book, Alcohol in Space: Past, Present and Future, Chris Carberry chronicles the history of extraterrestrial drinking, from the first mini-bottle sneaked onboard a Mercury capsule to the present. The following condensed excerpt covers the years onboard Mir, the predecessor of today's International Space Station.

Perhaps no other orbiting facility or spacecraft attained a more impressive reputation for cosmic drinking than the Russian Mir space station of the late 1980s and 1990s. While Russian policy officially prohibited them, alcoholic beverages—specifically cognac—were regularly smuggled aboard. For many Russians, it was seen as an important element in crew relaxation and socialization…"

Russian friends with whom I have on occasion (but not recently) drunk too much vodka have advised that it can be dangerous for a Russian to stop drinking for long periods, like more than 24 hours. The body isn't used to it, and they might simply keel over dead.

So it stands to reason that they would bring medicinal products like cognac into space.

I would have guessed vodka, instead of cognac though, as a major staple of "beverage" for Russian astronauts.

It's perfect to mix with Tang on those long space flights.

Isn't the Tang and vodka cocktail called a Buzz Aldrin?

Soyuz would have been a better name for that combination, of course.

Biggest problme with any kind of comestible in space, includign alcoholic beverages, is that human taste is dulled significantly in mocrogravity/"Zero G"; The lack of natural air circulation due to eddies from movement which occurs under garcity menas that air doesn't circulate in the maoth and nasla passges, so you don't get the full effect of taste; That's the resaon spiced ham and smallgoods and the strongest garlicky Borscht were the most popular contraband on the Shuttle and Mir respectively.
I'd imagien the bouqeut of certain wines and so forth would be considerably reduced even more than the article suggests.
