"Before we begin, I know some antsy readers out there simply can't wait to lecture me about how watermelons should never be grilled and called burgers. That's myopic nonsense based on macho barbecue logic. Grilling watermelon is awesome, and I truly feel for the people who are too hung up on keeping each food in its lane to try something new. As watermelon sits directly over an open flame, the most miraculous things happen to its flavor and texture—indescribable things. The first time I tried it I was so astounded that my body filled up with the sort of wondrous glee I feel after seeing a magic trick. Even if you're too apprehensive to try the recipe below, I urge you to set aside a nice fat slice of watermelon to throw on the grill alongside the burgers at your next barbecue, just to see what happens. If you're not tickled, well, I send you my condolences…."

That's myopic nonsense based on macho barbecue logic. The myopic nonsense is presuming why someone would object to you. I am not a barbecue person. I eat it, but don't cook it. I also eat lots of non-meat dishes. My Eastern European ancestors have a proud history of povert… er … vegetarianism. And I like grilled watermelon. Hawaiian shishkabob with or without meat are yummy. I might try it on a sammich after reading this. But it ain't a burger. So, since we are projecting motives and pathologies on others … Why are vegetarians so insecure that they have to equate non-meat foods with meat foods (burgers, hot dogs, chicken wings, steak, etc.)? If you like it, eat it. If you try it and don't like it, don't eat it. Either way, it's a personal opinion. Sheesh! |

That sounds interesting, actually. I'll try making it and eating it at some point. |

@etotheipi – THANK YOU! That's something that's always made me (more) nuts – let veggies be veggies, and enjoy them for what they are. Trying to make meat out of them seems to be a fool's errand. And if you're not eating meat for ethical reasons, isn't giving it up, a sacrifice of you will, kind of the point? |

OK, I'll stick with Spam, if it ain't meat, it ain't a burger. Why do people go to such extraordinary lengths to get things that aren't meat taste like meat? Just eat the real thing fer Christs Sake!!! It's not like we're running out, yet. |
