"Basing for the Wars of Roses" Topic

This is a further question to a previous topic i started about best rules for the Wars of Roses.
Thanks for the great response to that post, now i would like to pick your knowledge a little more.
I will be using front ranks Wars of Roses range(28mm) and have been playing with base sizes and have found 50mmx60mm size with the 50mm the frontage perfect, and would like to have 4 heavy infantry or 3 archers or 2 cavalry to a base.
So my question is would this set up fit with any of the rules!

Rules that use area movement, such as Peter Pig's "The Bloody Barons" or BRBV's "To The Strongest" can use any base size, since movement is by zone rather than inch-by-inch. Earlier this month I posted my plan to convert my existing 28mm collection to TBB on the Wars of the Roses board (in the Renaissance section).

But if you provide both sides' armies (or your mates use the same basing scheme as you), you should probably be able to adapt almost any set of rules to nearly any basing scheme.

Basing is always a contentious issue, with different rules requiring different bases. It might be worth considering basing your figures separately but then use a movement tray to build units. That way you will have the flexibility to use multiple rules sets with out the need to rebase. So infantry on 20mm square bases and cavalry on 25mm x 50mm for example.

Why not use 6cm wide by 5 cm deep.

- A wide rectangle looks more like a unit.
- 6cm wide is standard for most rules (the WRG standard adopted by DBx, FOG, AdG)

Eumelus. I think Peter Pig released a 2nd addition to cover 28mm, it sounds a good set of rules and i will look into them, thanks.

Arcane Steve, thanks for the idea, using that system would certainly solve the problem of basing v rules, but for this period it would look too rank and file compared to the uneven ranked mob i am looking for, although its a great idea for later periods!

Decebalus. Sounds a good idea, would i be expected to base 6 heavy infantry to a base with 60mm frontage or is it exceptable to base 5 to the base, as i am looking for a more ragged look to the ranks and files and 5 figures would have a bit more room to be based in untidy ranks!

Different rules need different basing so its hard to give a definitive answer. You have to go with a most likely for the rules you're most likely to use. I think a 20mm frontage per 28mm infantry figure is common. So I do 4 figures on a 40mm square(and sometimes 3 to give a more ragged look) But this allows a bit of flexibility so they don't look like a Napoleonic line. putting 3 figures on a row for a 60mm frontage would give the same effect. Most rules will let you get away with one less figure on a base, but it does depend on the rules. As @Eumelus says as long as the basing is the same as your opponent(usually its the frontage that matters) you'll be fine. I think I would stick with either 4(or 3) figures on a 40mm square or 6(or5) figures on a 60x40 rectangle as that does seem the most common for most rules.

You could do 40x40 with some 20x40 or 20x20 smaller bases to make up the size to give extra flexibility ?

Sometimes I think its a matter of taking your best guess and sticking to it. (And use PVA glue in cas eyou need to rebase).
You'll end up picking the rules based on your existing basing scheme at some point in the future anyway…
