Greetings,

Today, July 27th 2020, is the 140th Anniversary of the Battle of Maiwand, fought by Anglo-Indian and Afghan forces during the Second Afghan War. Ten years ago I started my "MaiwandDay" hobby blog to share info on my efforts to build good quality terrain and armies for a tabletop refight of the battle. Today I am introducing a new home for MaiwandDay. I have migrated from Blogger-dot-com to a bespoke site called, appropriately enough, maiwandday.com. All the old posts are there, as are most of the visitor comments. The pages and links are again available on the homepage, as are links for my much humbler CameroneDay blog, the posts from which have also migrated over to this new site. All the technical work was done by my daughter Isabella, while home from college over her 4-month long COVID-19 induced Spring Break. I'm happy to report she flew back last night and returned to school today.

All the above is not particularly significant for anyone but me, but I just put up the first new post at this new version of my site, which may be of interest to those who game the 19th and early 20th Century Afghan Wars as well as the intermittent campaigns on the North-West Frontier. It deals primarily with 19th Century AFGHAN MILITARY FLAGS. In my experience this is a subject on which little information is easily available to the interested wargamer. Unfortunately I haven't unearthed a hidden encyclopedia or anything close to that. What I have done is gather together bits and pieces of primary source info, along with some secondary source material on the subject.

I hope it will prove useful to some of you.

Here's the first link to the new site:

…and here's a sample of the visual info -- an illustration from a German book by J.N. Karafin titled: "Mullah preaching war against the Russians":

Good for your daughter!

I went to the new site, tried to access Battle Reports and got this:

No Results Found
The page you requested could not be found.

mghFond: As mentioned by me in that first post, the previous posts haven't been TAGGED yet, so all those categories -- such as "Battle Reports" are empty. I wanted to go live today since it's Maiwand Day -- rather than wait until after doing all that grunt work. I am doing it, but it will take a while. In honor of your thwarted effort I will put BATTLE REPORTS at the top of the list, and my apologies for the inconvenience.

PS. Thanks for the kind comment about my daughter!

Thank you for this great site ! I had of course bookmarked your previous site, but this one was immediately added.
We here in The Netherlands read about the havoc covid is creating in the US, while in Europe the second wave seems to arrive. Keep save !

Ah, Mad Guru, I should have read your initial post more carefully. So – duly noted! :)

Almost all the flags in this photo were made by the Flag Dude.

This really was a very hard fought game. The ebb and flow of fortune shifted repeatedly with attacks, feints, counterattacks, and routes! This will go down in the books as another epic Mad Guru Productions Inc. I'm very glad to have been part of it!!!

Rhingyll, that is an awesome array of Pathan flags! The Flag Guy definitely makes the best flags.
