I am NOT a Naval wargamer. However, a very long time ago, I cut down some Airfix H.M.S Shannon frigates to waterline, (rather roughly! lol)…and had some fun 'playing' at Hornblower! Without rigging, I could 'dismast' a ship! LOL!!! MY 'Rules' were EXTREMELY' basic…fighting, not sailing and subject to whim and D6! Fun, though. The Frigates, (or what might be left of them after 40+ years!), will still be 'somewhere'…but I thought I might find replacements on Ebay! LOL!!! DEFINITELY 'Collectors' models now! :( So, out of curiosity, rather than a real interest, I have looked into the Black Seas models from Warlord. The models look rather nice…especially if resin bases are added. Smaller than the old Airfix frigates…and ratlines will mean no dismasting (:() I have ordered a starter set…although for a 'future' project…MAYBE! Just wondering what proper Naval gamers think about the models and rule sets…without being SO technical that I will be put off…until after my Hornblower books have finally disintegrated…(They are well on their way! ;) ) |

Oh, Sorry…I should have paid more attention the 'Age Of Sail' board…still! |

The other option would be to go back to the Airfix Shannon and similar – I have some unbuilt kits in the loft. But a quick look on eBay shows they can be had for probably about as much as it would cost to post them – so not really worth it. |

The models are great, and the rules are pretty good. Just make sure you use the 'advanced' sailing rules, which are no more complex than the basic ones and much more realistic. Great for a fun game. |

I was pleased to see the advanced sailing rules make it into the final edit, and also that they seem to have been picked up as "standard" by a number of players. |

BillyNM…Ebay auctions START cheap…but those that I have seen end up at about £30.00 GBP! If you are U.K … ! (Edit: Ah, having looked you up…(and the name!, lol), it might be well worth you putting them up for auction, although I am not likely to go for that kind of price!, lol) I have seen Shannons from the U.S.A , but for myself, there isn't any point in buying from the U.S 'for Fun' …as postage to U.K is crippling, along with Customs Duty. :( I used to get Airfix kits for 17p…LONG time ago! lol. The Airfix Victory is cheaply available…such a pity the Shannon has not been re-issued! :( |

What sort of price would you go for and would you be interested in kits other than Shannon? I have Constitution in approximately eh same scale and a smaller scale that would make a good sloop against the larger frigates? |

BillyNM. I have just bought the Black Seas Starter, + extra Frigates, + USS Constitution! Have no idea when they will be built, though! lol. I might still be interested in Shannons at £10.00 GBP ea and a Constitution at £15.00 GBP…please remember that these were 'Fun' items long ago…and needed cutting down…hence the LOW offer! You might well get a much bigger sale on ebay! With the advent of the Zvezda 1/350 'Galleons' there may be buyers for the Airfix Golden Hind or Revenge…not me, though! I really do have 'mountains', (Avalanches are a frequent occurrence!), of stuff…for 'sometime, maybe'! LOL! |
