I've just ordered Thud Ridge from Wings at War, along with some 1/600 a/c from Tumbling Dice with a view to gaming air battles in the Sinai 1967-1973.

I know the WaW series are theatre-specific, but I thought the time frame and aircraft used in Vietnam would give me a good start in extrapolating an Arab/Israeli game.

I have a few questions, if anyone here is able to help:

1) How many flight bands are there? I've got the rules and planes on the way, so I'd like to order some clear acrylic flight stands at the same time. In the free game, Desert Spitfires, there are 4 altitude bands – I just wondered how many there are in Thud Ridge (bearing in mind the higher ceiling of jets). I'm intending to mount the planes on magnets and have different stands for different altitudes as I'd prefer that to using a dial.

2) For anyone who's got experience of modifying WaW rules, any advice? The periods/theatres I'm most interested in aren't covered in their series (e.g. USN v Libya 1980s, Iran-Iraq War, USN v IJN WW2, Latin America, etc).

Any advice gratefully received.

Scrap the acrylic flight stand idea – just found this old thread from Boggler – TMP link – brilliant! And so much cheaper, cheers Jim!

Warbases have my order for some 30mm bases, 7mm dice and dice holders and a trip to Wickes might be in the offing this afternoon :)

Bozkashi, good advice

Hi Nick,

There are four altitude levels in Thud Ridge.

The bases are 30mmx30mm for everything except B52's and tankers, which are 40mm x 40mm, with SAM batteries and ground targets on 30mm circles.

As regards converting the rules, the best bet is to use the closest match from the existing rules, I suppose, although the objectives will be different.

I have used Desert Spitfires as a basis of a conversion for The Football War but it needed quite a lot of work to make it conflict specific including working out aircraft stats etc.

I am now doing the same but for the Winter War, although that's progressing very slowly.

Worth a try though as it's a pretty cool set of rules.
