The publication of Dave Brown's General de Armee revived my passion for Napoleonic wargaming I've played many enjoyable games with that ruleset. But, like most Grognards, I have a hankering to fight the larger battles. Napoleon's Battles seem to be very popular and well supported, at least by the players. Before jumping in, I wonder if anyone can tell me about basing requirements or flexibility in basing especially for cavalry. IIRC, the early editions used a very odd basing scheme for cavalry.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts and comments.

The basing scheme in each edition has remained constant: infantry are four figures, 2x2, on a 3/4" wide by 1" deep base (18x25mm); cavalry are four figures 2x2 on a 1" wide by 2" deep base (25x50mm); artillery is one gun and two (horse artillery) or three (heavy artillery) gunners on a 1.5" wide by 1" deep base (37x25mm); and divisional/corps and small army/large army generals are on square bases 1"x1"/1.5"x1.5"/2"x2". (All assuming 15mm figures; for smaller figures one can keep the same basing but use more figures.)

Two notes:
(1) The excellent "Age of Eagles" rules use the same basing. ageofeagles.com

(2) The "very odd" cavalry basing gives correct brigade frontages ASSUMING two lines of squadrons. However, I have always mounted two figures on a 1"x1" base and used them in pairs, back-to-front, so as to be able to use the same figures in battalion-level rules.

note, Age of Eagles cavalry is based 2 figures on a 1" x 1", NOT 2" x 1".

If you just base your cavalry two figures per 1" x 1" base you will have a lot of flexibility for using other rules besides NB4.

Eumulus….that's what I do with cavalry….

Coopman et al, I based my 15mm Napoleons Battles as per the rules, but my 7YW using the Fredricks Battles I base them on 1" x 1"for the added flexibility,

I also have hundreds of cavalry bases that are 2" x 1" that I want to re-do. One of these days…

Thanks for the info. Sounds like I can make it work with my current basing.

6 figures on a 1 inch by 1 inch base looks much better.

I base all my 15mm Napoleonic cavalry with two figures on 1inch square bases. For Naps Battles I simply put one base behind another on a piece of steel paper (my bases are all magnetised).
(In Naps Battles IV, there is an optional 1 inch square base for British and later Portuguese infantry who typically fought in two ranks, rather than three)

I see Partizan Press sells the current edition of NBIV. I assume they got the rights to the game from the defunct Capitan Games?

Don't know many that play it anymore, but it would be nice to see it still around. I still have NB1 and the blue and red books. Still can't part with them.
