"Looking for a quick option from the lead mountain, I choose some Soviet riflewomen that I picked up from Bad Squiddo Games. Having finished the Hungarians, I needed some Soviet opponents and I wanted some different units to break up the monotony of the standard rifle squads. Some 800,000 women served in the Soviet armed forces during the Second World War. Like most of the combatant nations, this was mostly in medical and auxiliary units. However, the Soviets did allow a significant number of women to join combat units…"

In uniform, especially the loose-fitting Soviet uniform of WWII and a helmet, there is very little visible difference, if at all, between male and female soldiers. You could select a few troops from the pile and call them women. :) |

Dumb question, so dumb I could probably Google for the answer. But, OK, did the USSR ever really use females as front line infantry? Snipers, of course (these are surely not snipers). Rear Echelon, whether nurses, transport, AA, comms, even traffic control…but ground sloggers????? Fighter pilots is different I do accept. |

Women could join the army infantry as a regular soldier, joining the volunteer service. But from them usually special separate female units were not formed and women served along with men in ordinary military units. Except for one case when the 1st Separate volunteer women's Brigade was formed from female volunteers. But this military unit was never used at the front in real combat. It was part of the internal troops of the NKVD and was used to protect military and industrial facilities in the rear. So it will not be a mistake if you add one such figure to your Russian squad. |
