I have a scratch built pair of fleets for the Anglo-Dutch War, I made several years ago after reading a book on naval gaming. I've never been able to find a set that seemed playable and simple at the same time. Any suggestions?

If you want simple rules that still give a good game, try Don't Give Up the Ship. Yes, they're old but that doesn't mean bad.

If you mean the Gygax rules from the 70s, review says 6 hour playing time! I'll likely be playing solo.

I've heard good things about these:

+1 for Dont Give Up the Ship. I've never played it, but my gaming buddies used to play it back in the day. The played it so much the took to calling it "doguts,"

You could take a look at Avalon Hills Wooden Ships and Iron Men as well.

+1 to Exeter's comment – WS&IM are simple enough, and you can add in the advanced and optional rules to them as you become proficient.

I think I have a copy of Don't Give Up the Ship if anyone is interested.

The Junior Generals webpage has a simple set and a Trafalgar scenario. Very simple but fun.

WS&IM works well

Grand Fleet Actions in the Age of Sail
From A and A Games

inexpensive, simple and can accommodate large fleets

Convert them to Oak and Iron- fun rules set. You would have to make bases or buy them, but it can be done.

Tiller & Whipstaff ANGLO DUTCH FAST PLAY sold by Langton

My buddies and I have played these rules within the last 2 years and really enjoyed them. Not complex, but not too simple either. The rules give a very enjoyable game.

Fighting Sail from Osprey is good for big actions

I'd second Fighting Sail for simplicity, though it is for the Napoleonic period and you would have to retrofit for Anglo-Dutch. Tiller & Whipstaff by Langton is written for the period, so comes with all the ship details. It is more complicated than Fighting Sail, but less so than WS&IM.

Cheers,

Form Line of Battle is a pretty quick and easy set (although I must declare a personal interest :) )

coopman03 Jul 2020 7:48 a.m. PST

I bought the "It is Warm Work" rules last night. Only 28 pages long, an easy system to learn and will play fast. I could see them working for some pretty large AOS battles. And they were only $4.46 USD + local sales tax for the pdf.

Bloody Broadsides is a simplified WSaIM,
I've played at several cons and its a fun quick game,

BuckeyeBob03 Jul 2020 1:03 p.m. PST

check out the free rules from Warartisan
warartisan.com/rules

has both fleet action rules and single ship engagement rules.

rmaker03 Jul 2020 10:26 p.m. PST

Yes, I do mean the TSR rules from the '70's. And if that review really took six hours for a game, it's likely they had too many ships for the number of players, which will bog down any ruleset.

nnascati,
I strongly suggest that you investigate "Form on the Admiral's Wake" naval rules by Brian DeWitt. They are fast play, focus upon large fleet actions and the mechanics do a good job of handling high ship/player densities. Having played them a couple of times at Historicon, they are IMHO about 200 light years better than Osprey's "Fighting Sail".

Note – these rules were reviewed/discussed on TMP (back in 2017 IIRC).
