It's a local news outlet internet post. I'm not sure why it wouldn't be available to all. Overnight, Wikipedia caught up. Paragraph 3. link |

BALTIMORE — A World War II-era ship docked in Baltimore is about to get a new name. Living Classrooms Foundation and Historic Ships of Baltimore will rename the cutter Roger B. Taney. The ship was named after Taney because of his role as secretary of the U.S. Treasury, but he's most well-known for delivering the U.S. Supreme Court's majority opinion in the Dred Scott case, which argued all African Americans were not U.S. citizens. Advertisement For now, the ship will be referred to by its hull identification, WHEC-37, which stands for High Endurance Cutter, until another name is chosen.
"We are not erasing history," James Piper Bond, CEO of Living Classrooms Foundation, said in a statement. "Nor is it our intention to minimize the service and sacrifice of the men and women who have served with honor aboard the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Taney. Our intention is to learn from history and celebrate the legacy of the ship and those who served aboard." Living Classrooms recently completed a fundraising effort, raising $420,000 USD to dry dock the ship for critical repairs and preservation. The work will take place at the U.S. Coast Guard Yard in Curtis Bay in the fall. |

While I know that Taney was a bit of a racist prick (lots of those around) – it seems quite pointless to rename the ship now that she's a museum ship. It's one thing to be sensitive to current racist crap and quite another to waste time and effort on such past matters. You can NOT change the past, only the present and future. |

Not that I really care one way or another, but I do find the claim below to be utterly ridiculous. "We are not erasing history," James Piper Bond, CEO of Living Classrooms Foundation, said in a statement". Actually, that is precisely what they are doing. Perhaps if they just "rename" Washington D.C., AND the Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, Robert Byrd, AND numerous other memorials, buildings, schools, and freeways across the land, there will be peace in our time. Ha, ha, ha……… Almost had you there for a moment, right? Of course there won't. This will never end for some/many. |
