What goes wrong in any monitoring system was brilliantly summarised above. It was recommended to read "Pearl Harbour (sorry, Harbor) Warning and Decision" and, only a short way in, I would recommend it.

It is many decades old and subsequent research may alter much of the findings, but what I love is that analysis of how, in any task, we can watch out and yet miss what is so obvious, but then see it with that powerful diagnostic instrument, the "retrospectoscope"

if the us carriers located jap carriers approaching ,did they have orders to attack? or would they have to wait till japs strike pearl

Glad you are enjoying it deadhead. As I said there is a reason why US intelligence training courses either require or highly recommend reading it.
