Tom, Mr. Charlie was a term of respect used when speaking of the VC, not the NVA regulars, although I'm sure those were good soldiers in their own right. Mr. Charlie applied especially to VC sappers and engineers. No criticism of the figure intended. Your usual excellent work. |

I read a lot of novels and memoirs in addition to history books and I never heard Nathaniel Victor used for NVA troops. Generally, they used the catch all VC or just Charlie and variants on that – plus the numerous racial slurs of course. I never liked the film Hamburger Hill. The book was good but a confusing read [was a confusing battle so that is inevitable]. |
