…An online petition to change the name of Columbus, Ohio, has gathered over 25,000 signatures after the organizer suggested they borrow an idea from Guy Fieri and call it "Flavortown" instead… link |

I'm sure there's a unpronounceable Indian name for the area, So go with that. |
79thPA | 22 Jun 2020 7:57 a.m. PST |
You certainly can't argue with logic like that. |
doc mcb | 22 Jun 2020 7:59 a.m. PST |
Columbus was a great man. And the depth and breadth of historical ignorance is astounding -- and deliberate. |

Shouldn't this be on the Modern News forum? |

Totally agree D6 Junkie. I enjoy the Renaissance discussion boards as they, and the hobby, provide a welcome relief from all of the politics going on at the moment. I fear that this post only encourages the incursion of politics into the board while giving the topic originator enough deniability to say that wasn't the intent. Let's not take the bait and get back to discussing the hobby and posting pictures of miniatures. I will start a new thread with pictures of some Pancerni and Tatars that I just finished painting to get things going. |
D6 Junkie | 22 Jun 2020 8:40 a.m. PST |
Agreed it has nothing to do with the Renaissance Period. Only with current political views. Please do Martyn. What scale? |

"…from Guy Fieri and call it "Flavortown" instead…" Nope, do as the Mayor of New Orleans once did – 'Chocolate City'…fits in with the current theme… |

This town is full size. If someone wants to rename a 1/72 scale Columbus OH, that would go on the board appropriate to the scale and period. |

Colon Ohio as in Christobal Colon |
MajorB | 22 Jun 2020 11:03 a.m. PST |
Agreed it has nothing to do with the Renaissance Period. Presumably here because of when Columbus lived. But moot point … |
MajorB | 22 Jun 2020 11:06 a.m. PST |
And it's still ridiculous. If you rename Columbus OH, you'll have to rename Washington DC: "Despite having been an active slave holder for 56 years" link |
MajorB | 22 Jun 2020 11:14 a.m. PST |
And Pennsylvanis: "Slavery was documented in this area as early as 1639. William Penn and the colonists who settled Pennsylvania tolerated slavery" link |

Why not change the names of all the cities? Use names from the Middle East or Uzbekistan or Africa? Big ole names that no one can pronounce. It would be like being on vacation all the time! Perfect!! Oh wait! We need to change some street names too. Let's change all those too!!! Oh yah, this could be GREAT!!!!!!!!!! |
doc mcb | 22 Jun 2020 2:15 p.m. PST |
The Cherokees took their numerous slaves with them on the Trail of Tears. |
Bede19002 | 22 Jun 2020 4:35 p.m. PST |
Also rename Columbia university and Colombia (the country) |

Oh wait! We need to change some street names too. Let's change all those too!!! Oh yah, this could be GREAT!!!!!!!!!! They're doing this in Philadelphia. Taney Street is named after Supreme Court Justice Roger Taney, who wrote the Dred Scott decision. The City government is changing the name. |

Why all the allowed political discussions and posts all of a sudden? Makes no sense. |
Tgerritsen | 22 Jun 2020 7:07 p.m. PST |
CityMcCityFace? Let's name it after Origins and call it Originville? |
Bobgnar | 22 Jun 2020 8:45 p.m. PST |
Washington, District of Columbia is the next to go, named after two historical villains and all those statues in the city starting with Andrew Jackson will have to go. Oh I guess that means the $20 USD bill also, Yale college/university named after not a slave owner but a slave trader. So much work to do for the geographers. Maybe we can play with toy soldiers in peace well all this controversy goes on. |

Click bait. Plain and simple. |

Well let's face it … it was an interesting choice in the first place. I could be wrong and I may be going out on a limb but I'm fairly certain that Christopher Columbus never made it to Ohio so why on earth did its founder name it after him? Were they Italian or something? As far as name changing is concerned, it's obviously neither ignorance nor historically unusual to do so. London hasn't been called Londinium for quite a while = population and regime change. Te Russians are huge fans of name changes with ideological shifts for cities and of course whole countries change their names when the ideology which defines the state alters. |
Rudysnelson | 24 Jun 2020 5:40 p.m. PST |
Yep they could change the name to an Native American name but that could also be controversial. Locally Native American names are common such as Talladega which means place of water. However some names are derogatory. Sylacauga another town near me means Buzzards Roost. The Muskogee Creeks called the town that because it was filled with Shawnee refugees. These had been allowed to settle there as a buffer between the Creeks and Choctaws back in the mid-1700s. |

So what do we rename Ohio? |
Griefbringer | 28 Jun 2020 9:59 a.m. PST |
Presumably here because of when Columbus lived. Considering that the town in question was apparently officially founded and named in the early 19th century, it would probably have made more sense to post it to the Napoleonic discussion boards… |
