Hello all,

Where to find uniformological documentation on the Saxon army in 1866?

Stay safe,

Paskal

I found ‘The Armies of 1866: A Guide to the Uniforms, Weapons and Organisation of the Armies of the Seven Weeks War" by Nigel Smith useful when I was looking into the period many years ago.

Ok thank you ,It's bought, also I will see, because in my opinion everything must be very different from 1870-1871 in this army.

It is a good book, if you can get hold of a copy. It includes all the armies of 1866, both in Germany and Italy. . I would not, however, use it as a source for flags!

What about their flags?

Where should we look for them?

What is still on the uniforms, armements, equipment and organizations of the armies of the main 4 southern German states in 1866?

It is a real pleasure for me to compare them with those of 1870.

Paskal, the Smith book contains info on all those armies. Flags are not well covered, so I had to call the research myself. The result is the sets of flags sold by Pendraken in 10mm which are, I believe, the only accurate and largely comprehensive sets available for this period in any scale. Maverick Models has started to produce some flags for this period, basic designs for Saxony and Bavaria. Only the green Saxon flags were carried in 1866. All the Saxon originals are still in the collection of the German Army Museum in Dresden, sadly not on display. The Bavarian ones are in their Army Museum in Ingolstadt, and well displayed.

Pendraken in 10mm enlarged to 28mm, what does that do?

Mollinary21 Jun 2020 7:38 a.m. PST

Paskal, all the Saxon flags for 1866 and 1870 (total 24) come on a single sheet for £2.50 GBP including VAT. Not a great price to experiment on enlarging. Likewise with Bavarian and other South German states flags. Otherwise, go for the Maverick Models versions of the Saxon and Bavarian Flags. Not the Wurttemberg ones however, they are wrong. They should have the royal monogramme on one side.
