Hello everyone

Well, as we all know today is the Battle of Quatre Bras on June 16, 1815. One of the heroes of the battle was the 23-year-old Prince Karl Bernhard of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach. Having taken command of the 2ème Brigade de la 2ème Division d'Infanterie consisting of the Nassau-Usingen and his old regiment the Orange-Nassau regiment, due to the wounding of his former superior by a kick from a horse! So many great books are written about this battle that the majority of the people out there know every detail so I will not give a recount. However, I would like to post a few pictures of the man in his early career and later military career. The first is my depiction of the Prince as an officer of the Saxon Leib Garde Grenadiers c.1809. The second is the actual portrait and the last two are a painting of the Prince as a general and a photograph in the late stages of his life.

Also, the Prince traveled to the United States in the 1820s and wrote a diary about his experience. link

A personal hero of mine as he is an excellent example of constructive disobedience. The Duke of Wellington was, apparently, unforgivably rude to him 205 years ago today.

great work again, the uniform you re constructed is not 1809 however, it looked different in the cut of the lapels, yours is clearly 1810 cut.

von Winterfeldt,

Thank you for the correction. Could you provide the correct uniform so I can make both on my blog? I went off his main portrait and used this

I will make the correction on my blog as I can't go back and edit here. I am reading the Prince's diary about traveling through the United States. You can see why the man was promoted so young. He is very intelligent and detailed. He describes where I am from in Richmond, Va perfectly, and even describes Virginia as a whole exactly how it is still today. Also, his description of key American Fortresses such as West Point and forts around Baltimore are fascinating.

no need to correct just change the date to 1810.

Please give me your e mail address and I will sind you plates about the 1809 uniform.

From where did you get this nice plate above?

von W,

Thank you! My email is Boomerlc23 @ gmail. com

I found both the portrait and the plate by typing in Saxon Leib Garde Grenadiers and was taken to Pinterest for the pictures. There are tons of pictures/portraits on Pinterest even though some are incorrectly named.

von W,

Thank you for the pictures! The officer in surtout is that a leib garde grenadier officer on campaign? Thank you again. I will be updating my blog on the Prince and some pictures based on his observations of my hometown. He describes the James River looking similar to the Danube.

von Winterfeldt18 Jun 2020 1:45 p.m. PST

Hi

No the officer in the surtout is an officer of the gendarmes d'ordonance which i attached just for good measures.

von Winterfeld,

Thank you for the pictures!

Everyone I wanted to show my blog post about the Prince and his travels through the United States. He visited three places that I have lived in. Hopefully, you will take the time to read his diary which is very detailed and interesting as an American to read. uniformingthepast.blogspot.com
