This is a really interesting article, with a good supply of contemporary illustrations and anecdotes (though it could have benefited from a bit of editing). I'd no idea that the practice of duelling was so prevalent in the French Army of the time, or that so many soldiers of all ranks were mad enough to seek a bubble of "Reputation" even when they were far from the cannons' mouths.
Mind you, I found the character of the (eventual) General in "The Duellists" much less appealing than the crazy Hussar, eventually a Demi-Solde, played by Harvey Keitel. En Garde, Armand!
