"In a first, the USS Portland took down a target drone with a new solid state laser this week, the first step in the Navy's quest to get the powerful weapon on more ships in the future.

The shot from the San Antonio-class landing platform ship tested out what's known as the Technology Maturation Laser Weapon System Demonstrator, or LWSD, which has been aboard the ship for several months. The May 16 test, announced by the Pacific Fleet today, is the first public acknowledgement of the system being put to use…"

Just how impressive the test is rather depends on the definition of 'target drone' – a $19.99 USD quad-copter not very impressive (save perhaps being able to target something so small), a Reaper or similar a bit more so.

I like it, AND, best of all, there's actually plausible deniability since supposedly no light beams that can be seen are emitted, like on TV and in the movies.

May be the perfect thing for taking out annoying, small, fast boats. Then, we need to come up with some sort of rumor to scare the bejeesus out of the locals, uaing their superstition(s) against them.
