"Italy's Near Future Submarine (NFS) design will be Italian in nature. Currently the backbone of Italian Navy's (Marina Militare) submarine force are four Type-212A submarines. These are equipped with fuel cell Air Independent Power (AIP), which makes them among the most stealthy submarines anywhere. But the Type-212A is best known as a German design, not Italian. I hope so!

That will be interesting.

German tech in WWII seemed to be far superior, IIRC.

Protection of indigenous industrial capacity …. move long nothing to see here. Well, that was my cynical take on the article.

Not sure how that relates to the year 2020.

The latest German frigates have a permanent list and the navy even refused to accept the first one due to long list of defects. German naval shipyards have become glorified jobs creation programs and are apparently quite dysfunctional. Though there are no issues with the submarine manufacturers which service a very healthy export market as well as building German sbs.

The German military is not what what it was in 1939-42 or 1991. It is a shadow of a service. And as such its industrial base isn't what it used to be either.

In some areas Italy is more advanced these days – for example they have active experience in manufacture of components and assembly of stealth fighters. Their ship yards are capable of churning out small aircraft carriers and amphibious docks.
