All,

They ain't pretty, and they certainly ain't perfect, but here's what I came up with. I'm preparing to run map campaigns for my "Kampgruppe Klink" for Operation Barbarossa, and what I've decided is separate maps for Minsk, Smolensk, Kiev, and Vyazma. Take a look, if ya like.

Minsk, north is up.

Smolensk, north is up.

Kiev, north is left.

And Vyazma, taking us right up to Zhukov's winter counteroffensive.

Let me know what you think.

Why squares instead of hexes? Just curious.

Andrew,

Really just because I drew these up myself in PowerPoint and squares were 1000x easier than doing hexes ;)

From my perspective, a square translates to a 6' x 4' table just as easily as a hex does, and in terms of movement, orthogonal costs one and diagonal costs two movement points, so it's not 'cheating.'

I think they look great, they should certainly do the job!

Make diagonal 1.5 and you're accurate enough that it doesn't matter.

Also, you can easily make a "hex grid" with squares. Just offset every other row by half the width of a square.

Thanks guys.

Hey Jack,

Like your maps.
1) What is the difference between the yellow roads and the gray ones?
2) Some of your roads lead to no where? (Are they considered unfinished?)
3) If each Square is 4x6 table, does that mean the E6-7 on Minisk board is just one big forest? (Asking for board terrain purposes)

Thanks for sharing

114PA,

Thanks!

1. It should be yellow and blue, not sure why they're showing yellow and gray to you. So yellow are roads and blue are rivers.

2. I'm assuming you're speaking of some of the rivers? All the roads should lead from one town to another.

3. Yes, my intent is for each square to be a 6' x 4' table. If I have a fight in E6 or E7, the table won't be entirely covered in forest, but it will certainly be heavily wooded. I may still have a dirt road running through, maybe a farm, maybe a hill or two, even a stream, and lots of woods.

My pleasure, any time!

V/R,
Jack

Jack, looking forward to seeing these AARs – and reading about them here in the Tagebuch.
