"En aout 1870, la France est en guerre contre la Prusse. Trois armées allemandes occupent l'Est de la France. Mac-Mahon est alors chargé de constituer une armée pour aller libérer François Achille Bazaine, alors commandant en chef de l'armée du Rhin. C'est au sein d'une division de cette armée, dite de « Chalons », appelée la « division bleue » – commandée par le général de Vassoigne, que le Marsouins et le Bigors combattent pour la première fois côte à côte.

La division bleue n'arrivera pas à Metz mais sera forcée de se retrancher à Sedan, bloquée dans sa progression par l'armée allemande. Le général de Vassoigne reçoit alors l'ordre de reprendre Bazeilles aux prussiens. Malgré la supériorité en nombre et en armement côté allemand, les Troupes de Marine parviennent à reprendre le contrôle total du village à la nuit tombée, à coup d'assauts héroïques…"
