Has anyone any recommendations for modelling a unit of 54mm French Chasseurs d'Afrique in plastic?

I'd like to build a unit of 6 mounted figures for tabletop wargaming scenarios set in North Africa and Mexico, circa 1865-1900.

I bought a set of Expeditionary Force ACW Federal cavalry, thinking I might add Havelock kepi covers with paper, but the basic uniform just isn't very similar.

Any recommendations?

Could you use the mounted Marx recast Mexican Presidials with a head swap? Or I think the kepi mounted Mexicans are also available. You could cut down the shake. Look at Toy Soldier Company.

Hi Berczerk,

Check Helmet online shop you can maybe find something interesting:

Historex got pare legs with Lasalle trousers :
historex.com/crbst_16.html

You can use some green stuff to widened the trousers of your ACW cavalry to get the Lassalle overalls look, and the sash around the waist characteristic of the french colonial troop. Don't forget to burden the horses with a lot of stuff !

Maybe a way to avoid the green stuff is to use the legs of one of the AIP British cavalry in Crimea, they are a bit in the wider side.

Del Prado have a chasseur d'Afrique i(1850) n is Cavalry collection but it looks quite rare and expensive and it's not exactly what you need
auction

I hope this helps

Cheers

You're welcome.

Maybe you can drop by the little wars revisited forum and ask, I'm sure that people like Mike Blake can come with more options.

I had this discussion with myself a few years ago. I went with the Del Prado option. How about DSG Deetail mounted Foreign Legion for a cheaper option.

The AIP Crimean War Light Dragoons are very close. They also wore booted overalls and they have the correct pouch belt. You would still have to do a head swap or rebuild the shako into the correct shape with green stuff. They didn't always wear the neck cloth as shown in the link from PeloBoubon's post.

More great recommendations. I like the AiP figures -- reasonably priced and easy to convert. Many thanks.
