Started a new army because you were inspired by a sinle figure?

I found myself doing this recently. I finally got around to putting together and painting two packs of 'Delvians', (high elves), riding griffins from Battle Valor. These are beautiful models that go together very easily. However, when I put them together the front feathers of the beast reminded me of scale armor. I decided to paint the feathers on the breast and fore legs in bronze and create half cataphract griffins!

So now I am looking for all the Late Roman or Byzantine figures I have because I need to build an army to go with this unit! I've added fantasy elements to several ancient armies to use them in fantasy games, (flying carpets for my Arabs, were wolves and giants for my Celts, minotaurs and centaurs for my Greeks, etc.)

So, how about you. Ever built an army to go with an inspirational figure or unit?

Well it may not be an army but I have many dozens of US Marines from Hue/Tet 68 from Gringos 40, based on just one figure. It was a preview of a planned release of a Marine running under fire, but holding his helmet on….it just looked so lifelike

Perrys cape wars and Gringo 40's Maximillian…

Figure? No. Single unit, now and then. The 2nd West Prussian Reserve grew into an entire Prussian army.

Yes. Way back when I saw a Lizardman Stegodon at a convention when passing through the room and I had to have one. Which lead to an army, which lead to 8 WHFB armies.

I liked the Skorcha (sic) warcaster miniature so much I went ahead and bought the WARMACHINE Khador starter set. Now I have roughly $1 USDk in stuff, played the game for 10+ years. Haven't played the newest edition.

All my Hott Armies started that way. I came across my old fantasy figs and had to do something with my Giants, Lizard-men, Bugbears and Dark Elves. Each army is based on one of my favorite D&D modules.

Same thing happened with my French Indochina collection. I saw some painted figures online and got inspired.

I really try hard not to get sucked into a range by the figures. But a few years ago I saw the Spanish American/Philippine range by Miniaturas 1898 and it sucked me right in. They are exceptional figures.

I sculpted a set of superheroes 1.3 billion years ago. Among them was a kitsune in a purple kimono wielding a katana. That led to buying Splintered Light foxes with the order of other SL stuff for Redwall. Then paining up some dogs to look like foxes. The a proper kitsune force. And space marine kitsune as well.

I also have several character figures that eventually got hordes of minions … does that count?

No is the short answer.
But, since these days I only game with ImagiNations, I may see an appealing figure and decide to add a regiment or squadron of them to my existing forces, or to add another general or staff officer to one of my armies.

Yes, saw a beautiful large 54mm or larger painted figure of a Polish Winged Hussar at the siege of Vienna riding down a Janissary. Two Polish armies later here I am. Two cuz I didn't like the figures I used in the first one and found some much better 15mm Renaissance figures, Essex I think. The first I sold to a friend, the second I used myself.

Of course. How do you think i fell into this rabbit hole in the first place?

arthur181503 Jul 2020 9:17 a.m. PST

No. If I ever came close, I stopped myself in time.
