Anyone who has followed my blog will know that I have dedicated casualty markers for all of my units. Around the edge of each marker dial is an appropriate slogan for whichever faction the unit fought for. Parliament's men have "for God and Parliament", the Royalists have "pre deo Rege et Patria" and the Covenanters have "Couenant for Religion King and Kingdomes"
Despite my better judgement, or maybe as a side effect of the great contagion, my thoughts have turned to the Army of Montrose. I have a couple of slogans for their casualty markers, but nothing really grabs me. I haven't had a "Yes! That's the one" moment. So I turn to the hive mind of the ECW board for assistance. Nothing too long (as it has to fit in a fairly small space). Any thpoughts/suggestions? Thanks in anticipation…. |

"Judge and Avenge my Cause, O Lord!" The motto on one of the three standards Montrose raised in his last expedition, 1649. (The other two said "Quos pietas virtus et honor fecit amicos" and "Nil medium"). |

How about a line from Montrose's own hand: "To Win or Lose It All" From the second verse of his "My Dear and Only Love", lines 13-18: He either fears his fate too much, Or his deserts are small, That puts it not unto the touch To win or lose it all. |

Thank you all, some good suggestions. Still can't see a stand out "yes, that's the one" though. Any more for any more? |

What about "Confident thou'lt raise me with the just?" |

I don't see how you improve on GurKhan's "Nil Medium" for Montrose. It's pretty much the Montrose Toast in two words--everything or nothing; no getting by; nothing average. |

'Can little beasts with Lions roar?' From one of his metrical poems, shortly before his execution. |

Thank you all. Some great suggestions. I had already thought of 'famous by my sword' but wasn't sold on it. 'To win or lose it all' has grown on me. I think we have a winner. Thanks again for all the suggestions |

What about "see Scotland and die"? |
