Hi everyone!

With M&T II in my greedy little hands I'm finally starting to game the AWI in 28mm. Starting from scratch on this project. I've ordered some figures from Brigade Games, I got some fence kits from Battlefield terrain concepts.

What I need are buildings, only a few (to start).

So, for you AWI veterans out there, what are some of your favorite 28mm AWI buildings? so far I've checked out 4Ground, Sarissa, and Charlie Foxtrot. are any of these manufacturers easier to put together?

Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

The colonial cabins from 4ground are good looking and easy to assemble

I am fond of this house from Things from the Basement. I am also looking forward to their Gettysburg Farms kickstarter.

Go on EBay and look for O scale buildings, they are cheaper and there are many that would work for you.. Other than that the Perry buildings are nice.

Disco Joe08 May 2020 5:25 p.m. PST

Mark, on the Perry website the buildings are 4Ground and according to the website that area is empty.
Stew,I agree that the 4Ground and Things From the Basement buildings are both nice. With 4Ground you don't have to paint them. With the one that Things From the Basement has you have to paint it first so it is up to you how much additional work that you want to do.
The same with Charlie Foxtrot. You would need to paint them.

History Works has sold a line of pre-painted Gettysburg area buildings in near 28mm scale for a few years now. I bought most of these for ACW gaming, and a few can be used for the AWI too.

They're big, and so represent skirmish-scale footprints. If you're planning on doing battle gaming with these, you would need a large area to lay out a farm complex for example.

Also, they're enclosed models, so no dropping figures into them. The prices of these fully-assembled and pre-painted models are fairly moderate, depending on how big the individual building is that you get (they have a barn that's huge and pricey – bought one during a 30% off sale). Buying pre-assembled and painted leaves time for giving them some enhanced weathering too (which I did).

If interested, I'd move on these, as it seems their supply online is now starting to get a little thin.

Does History Works have a website?

Charlie Foxtrot has some great buildings in the New World section – some based on actual buildings in North America. I use quite a few of those models in my AWI games. link

Thanks for the replies everyone.
I must confess that I am kinda torn between kits that are pre-painted like 4ground and those that require some extra work.
The prepainted ones will be quicker but all look the same but the ones I'll have to paint will be able to customize easier. Plus I'm not all that experienced painting buildings.

These are plastic kits of Russian houses from Pegasus, very sturdy.

WarWizard asked if History Works still has their website up, and I don't think they do anymore. Their models only seem to be available now from distributors who have remaining inventory.

Avoid the Pegasus unless you're OK with replacing the thatched roofs. No thatch in AWI.

Sarissa's "plantation houses" are good, their smaller houses seem off. Windows are too big, too few window panes.

I like what things from the basement and Charlie Foxtrot are doing. They're basing their buildings on real structures, so get both the styles and proportions right.

Many of my buildings are O scales I've gotten on EBay.
WARNING:
1- They're too big for 28mm wargaming. Most need to be cut down. A few do not, like the plasticville brick colonial church, and the (not for AWI, but good for ACW)
"plantation house".
2- They are made of very hard plastic, and are tough to cut.

Given the above, stick to resin and MDF purpose made, or
scratch build.

Follow up question for those who have purchased the Sarissa or Charlie buildings please;

How ‘necessary' is it do you think to also purchase the separate roof tile sheets? Are the ones that come with the building kits do basic that the sheet is a necessary upgrade?

Thanks again in advance!

On some Charlie Foxtrot buildings I've simply painted the roof to resemble a slate roof. On others I've used roof tiles from Scenic Express that look like weathered wood shakes – no painting necessary. Finally, on an Impudent Mortal mill, I used the plain tiles and then painted and weathered them. Depends on the look I'm going for.

95th, nice call on the scenic express shingles. I assume you get the HO scale for 28mm buildings?

AICUSV17 May 2020 10:12 p.m. PST

The town I live in was established in 1704, incorporated in 1714. We even had a little action take place here during the AWI. The first frame construction building was put up in the 1840s. Before that everything was either stone or log construction.

David Graffam makes two nice paper saltbox houses downloadable from Wargame Vault. There are other houses and a church as well, if you match it with the right facade choices.

Stew art – I use the O-scale weathered shakes: link

You can see some photos on my blog – the tavern in the first article and if you scroll down and find the dairy and the stable they are all done with O scale shakes – some brown some gray. I thought the HO scale were too small. minysoldiers.blogspot.com

Thanks 95th. I already follow your blog and your terrain is exactly what I am going for. 😀

Thanks Stew art – appreciate it.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions.

I ended up ordering some buildings from Sarissa just bc I liked the look of them better, along with some sheets of shingles that 95th suggested.

I figure it'll all arrive around the time I get tired of painting the miniatures and need the change of pace. 😀

History Works is mentioned above. Still exist? Link? Much appreciated.

Please check out the buildings from "Things From The Basement." They are excellent buildings and perfect for the New England and New York area. Easy to put together and very reasonably priced. Plus they are a great company to deal with. I use them almost exclusively in my Rev War period games.

Here is the address for them;
