Beautiful! I'm not sure what it has to do with Hai Van Pass but anything with an Ontos (my favorite armored vehicle) is fine with me.

They often were part of convoy escort thru Hai Van pass north of Danang on RC 1 heading toward Hue. Pretty rough mountainside road. 3/26 did that for a short while in Sept of that year. Area between Danang and Phu Loc village. Also set up platoon sized observation posts overlooking the road.

I went over Hai Van Pass heading from Phu Bai to Danang in May 1972. We were warned about the danger from VC ambushers and were given a pink team to escort us far as the top of the pass. We tooled up for an epic fight and, when we made it to the top, we discovered a small store where we bought beer and sandwiches for lunch after waving goodbye to the gunships.

The only dangerous event occurred when the air brakes on one of the 10-tons failed and we just barely avoided running a ARVN convoy off the road. They were the only ARVNs we encountered actually heading toward the NVA so we gave them some room.

The view from the parking lot at the store was beautiful.
