I've had some 28mm Paul Hicks / Footsore minis for 1914 Tommies hanging around for ages and never painted them because trench warfare seemed boring and impractical to recreate as a wargame. Lately, I had a brainstorm. Why wouldn't I use them in a WW1 commando type skirmish game – i.e. raids from small boats onto German occupied Belgium or the Vaterland itself??? The lockdown-driven madness escalated and I envisioned my Tommies landing from airship dirigibles to seize German VIP's and top secret documents! I called my imaginary chaps "C-Force" in my head. Empress does both WW1 era RN and also Spartacist sailors and Nationalist freikorps usable as late WW1 German Imperial navy and army respectively. So I could purchase and build a German nemesis and counterpart to C-Force – Die Wotansmacht-Abteilung! Can anyone suggest a set of WW2 skirmish rules for commando type ops that could be modified for WW1 gaming with less capable automatic weapons and small boats (and airships) suitable for WW1 ? Maybe 20 figures a side and appropriate victory conditions and objectives? |

GASLIGHT would probably work. It has a Victorian SciFi supplement available too. |

I recommend the Donald Featherstone "raid" rules in Wargaming Commando Operations link They are very simple and great fun! You'll have to do your own scenarios and victory conditions, but I've run a number of very successful multi-player games with one side umpire controlled and 9 to 12 figures being run by the players. Player blogs on the games can be found here: link link link link |

Fistful or Lead would work well or perhaps Where Stem Guns Dare from Nordic Weasel but with a few WW 1 tweaks. |

NUTS! would easily work for that. |

Black Ops from Osprey Games. Used it a few times for WWII commando Raids. |

NUTS! would easily work for that. Does NUTS! provide for mission objectives? And does it have rules for stealth, boats and demolition? I am going to assume that any dirigible rules are going to have to be written by YT. |

You may have to make up your own rules for the boats. |

"Chain of Command" works well with a platoon per side. There are supplements for both the Spanish Civil War and 1930's Abyssinia and im sure I've seen a couple of articles in one of the TFL Xmas Specials about using them for WW1 skirmishes as well. |

Our club used the Fistful of Lead rules for a Historical WW2 Normandy scenario where a US paratroop unit overran a battery of German artillery. |
