I wish I painted that good, but then I'd have so few of my mini's painted… Compromise is what I live with.

Your mini's look great! Love your tabletop report, as commented in your other thread. Cheers!

Thanks all.

Sarge, there is very little skill involved, trust me. :)

I just use basic block colours and a liberal application of wash. Maybe a little extra effort on some of the leaders and characters. After decades of painting I'm still amazed at the skill of some people but I don't have the time or eyesight to even try these days.

Looks okay from across the table is generally what I hope for, as you say in the other thread. I think halfway decent basing helps too. An old friend used to say it was the frame of the miniature.

I've experimented, over the years, with basing techniques. Tried a number of variations. I agree with your friend: minimal effort on the base will yield a sizable improvement for the overall appearance of the mini.

I use a mixture of colored sands, which really took my mini's up a notch. Static grass would take them even higher, but that is too much effort for me.

I'm a massive fan of The Dip/Magic Wash techniques. I do simple block painting, followed by The Dip/Magic Wash. I've managed to paint hundreds of figures this way, completing multiple armies, of multiple races. They're not the prettiest, but they're painted, and based, such that, at 3+ feet, they look respectable.

As Stalin said, "Quantity has a quality all its own." That is what I am aiming for. Cheers!

Funnily enough that Stalin quote was exactly how I started my blog post. :)

Happy gaming.
