From last month link

Jefferson Davis called you in, based on your last battle – He is going to appoint you the commander of a new Confederate Army to win the war – He is also going to allow you to choose any 3 Corps Commanders and a Cavalry Commander from anywhere in the Rebel forces – who do you select? Note – look their performance at Corps Command

Would you select a Lee, Jackson, Hood and AP Hill
Or would you go with a Jackson, Cleburne, Hardee and Forrest?

Would you substitute in Mosby, Johnson, Longstreet, Bragg, or Stuart?

Cleburne never led a corps, so he is out. Lee was an army commander, not a corps commander. Mosby did not even lead anything as large as a brigade.

So, they shouldn't be consider I think for this exercise.

Corps – Man, this is hard. Many were great divisional leaders, and not so great at corps command (Hill, Hood). AP Stewart, Longstreet and Jackson on his better days (NOT Seven Days or Cedar Mountain) I guess would be my three.

Cavalry – Also difficult. If I want a raider, then Forrest (better than Morgan). Wheeler was not great (failed in the communication qualification many times). Stuart not great either. A pure cav commander might have to be…can't think of one that was truly effective in commanding cavalry in its intended role.

First off…I would need to know what year this is…also, what theater are we fighting in? (for this discussion I am thinking probably late 61 or early 62 and in the Eastern Theater)…

Secondly the first thing I would do is to ask him to replace Alexander Stephens as the Vice President.

Thirdly I would ask him to replace himself as the President or else, agree not to get involved in petty personal power politics between myself and my command staff on all theaters and fronts.

After he agrees (and I get it in writing)…we would then get to work….but I would need more info before assigning this…

Three Corp Commanders:
1st Corps Longstreet
2nd Corps Jackson
3rd Corps Richard Anderson

Cavalry: Forrest. He knew what needed to be done and how it needed to be done.

Corps: Jackson, Longstreet, Cleburne – I know he never commanded a corps, but that was political – he should've been promoted
Cavalry: Wade Hampton

I think I would go with Hardee, Cleburne, and AP Stewart as infantry corps commanders with Wade Hampton to command the cavalry.

I know Pat Cleburne never commanded a corps for any appreciable length of time, but he had all of the qualifications in my book. I would pass on Jackson because of his rather up and down performances as a corps commander. Hampton is the least of the rather ineffective Confederate cavalry commanders.

Another possible choice for an infantry corps would be Stephen D. Lee.

And my army artillery commander would be E. Porter Alexander.

Army commander: Lee
A Corps Commander: Jackson. Cannot break up the Lee-Jackson dream team.
B Corps Commander: Richard Taylor. Not sure he ever technically commanded a corps, but he did command multi-divisional commands in independent operations, so close enough.
(Longstreet was IMO a best Confederate corps commander acting in a subordinate role. If I am putting together a dream team I would want men who proved capable of independent operations which is why he did not make the cut. I could be tempted to give Cleburne a corps. He did command one after Chattanooga but was superseded before the start of the 1864 campaign so I think he does qualify. However I would want him as a division commander under Jackson. Anderson would also get a division.)
Reserve Division Commander: A.P. Hill. As a corps commander he didn't live up to expectations. He was a good division commander and a great administrator. It would be a waste not to use him. He had problems under both Jackson and Longstreet so he would best serve reporting direct to Lee. So I am organizing my army on a 2 corps plus 1 division basis.
Cavalry Corps Commander: Hampton.
Commander of independent cavalry division: Forrest
Artillery Commander: Stephen D. Lee based on his performance at Second Manassas and Antietam.

I would agree with CORebel

D.H. Hill is probably the most under rated CSA general. Yes he was mercurial and often did not get along with others, but he was a fighting general and certainly would have better served Lee in Corp command than A.P. Hill or Ewell after Jackson's death.

Had Daniel Harvey been a Virginian, Lee would have given him the opportunity. His big falling out with Lee goes back to the attack at Malvern Hill when he told Lee in no uncertain terms what a major mistake it would be. Yet he followed his orders and did all that was humanly possible in the face of a hopeless attack.

I would chose Polk, Pillow, and Floyd for corps commanders and Wheeler for the cavalry -- because I want the Confederates to lose.

Since I don't want the South to win I'll step aside in favor of Braxton Bragg

But my suggestions will be for infantry:

Earl Van Dorn
Leonidas Polk
Sterling Price

Cavalry Albert Pike.

+1 for Bragg

Honorable mention for Polk

How about Joseph Johnston?
