I have the lovely Conquest figures including three with grenades. Can't find any reference to rangers using them, although Zaboly apparently mentions them in his Osprey book -- which I cannot find mine.

BUT . . . rangers DID attack Indian settlements, maybe French outposts (?), and it occurs to me that since they obviously could not carry cannons, a few grenades would be very useful in attacking, say, a blockhouse, or even maybe blowing down a gate.

Anybody have more information about any such thing?

The raid on St Francis was by whaleboat so weight would have been less a concern. St Francis was a large town with European as well as indian-style buildings and a council house with walls looped for muskets. The rangers burned the whole place. I can imagine grenades being brought and used in such an action.

I am presently reading Crucible of War by Fred Anderson. In it, there is an account of a French attack on Fort Bull on 27 March 1756, in which he relates the defending British having copious amounts of grenades. After reading that episode, I did some on-line research, and even the Wikipedia page references grenades. I think this is the only FIW battle where I've seen grenades referenced.

Annoyingly, one change WRT the Muskets & Tomahawks rules: M&T1 had rules for grenades, M&T2 does not.

BTW, historically the grenades didn't help the defenders of Fort Bull much, they were decisively defeated and the fort destroyed…

I expect weight was a consideration for field use, but not for naval or fortifications. However, i CAN imagine a ranger force carrying a few if they anticipate attacking a blockhouse.
