We seem to have been hornswoggled again.

As far as gaming figures are concerned- incorrect cords on front of bearskins; surtout worn more commonly than habits; and for horse furniture, the later round portmanteau provided than earlier rectangular ones.

Rousellot gives us a bad lead by only drawing the latter, while in his text he states "Le porte-manteau eut d'abord ses extrémitiés rectangulaire conformément au decrét du 4 Brumaire An. X, mais vers 1808, un nouveau modéle a extrémitiés circulaires fut mis en service (Fig 5)."
[Les Carabiniers Rousellot Pl44 1804-1810 Page2]

Now, I don't have the text for 'decrét du 4 Brumaire An. X'
anywhere relating to cavalry horse furniture, however he cites the same decree for Dragoons (and presumably others).

Is the decree specific for regiments or a general regulation depicting the common heavy cavalry portemanteau anyone?
Neither Picard nor Houssaye mention details.
Many thanks,
davew

I should have added previous info-debates here:

@Marc the plastics fan
Duly enjoyed!
The entire range of Franznap Miniatures is stunning.

Ok Marc-
but I see the sculptors didn't even try to correctly represent the long cords that 'should be' attached under the epaulette on onto a chest button. Just ending in a flappy tassel on the shoulder. (I will at least attempt the modification for my new unit).

And the mangled English on the site- please someone get them a lawyer!

Awaiting definitive info still on the decree cited- what I'm looking to confirm (perhaps not explained fully first post), is,
- are the carabiniers specified by name/ design, or
- is the decree non-specific and referring to saddlery (Heavy/ Reserve) generally?

Of course the excellent Bellangé print exists: link (tho the article is full of cr*p).

Not even Courcelle is consistent (unless there are fake ones being made in the style- not entirely implausible)…

Dave, you won't like these cords either then

What scale are you working in?

Well Marc, at least they are an attempt if not 100%, like the others.

And the horse furniture also, how do these manufacturers decide, and when they appear to be right, get bagged for it!?

That review blurb is a bit garbled and more inaccurate info than normally appears. The models are better than the review IMHO.

I'm stuck in last C; 25mm Minifogs Sir- I modify their Gren a Cheval by removing aiguilettes, shaving lapels and adding new epaulettes to all and sundry. Now I understand the bonnet have to be shaved down (cords), eagle on patch removed and new cords added with cotton thread.

However the new regiment I'm going to retain the habit with lapels with other improvements noted, plus I'll give them the privilege of having two eagles, as I'm also doing for the senior Garde Imperiale cavalry.

If confirmed for the horse portmanteau I'll continue to use Gr a Cheval horses instead of the 'designated' later 1808 model (round).

Cheers wine

I now find I do have the decree- Cmdt. Bucquoy series Les Uniformes du Premier Empire, Les Cuirassiers P36 so problem solved.

It is a generic decree, for the 'Cavalry' without specifying or limiting it's effect it seems. Interesting to note that [a number of] both 'cavalry' and ci-devant cuirsassier regiments appear in Bucquoy illustrations with round porte-manteau as well pre-1806.

I'm happy enough with the decision to make my new unit utilising the 'close enough' Grenadier a Cheval horse furniture on models. Perhaps the odd one will get a sheepskin as well for variation.

Cheers all,
davew
