"After the III Carlist War ended in 1876, the Spanish Government raised the need to organize defenses on the border with France, San Sebastián and the port of Pasajes and, incidentally, ensure the domain of the territory against a possible Carlist attempt. To study this question, a series of military commissions were established between 1876 and 1884 that determined to design, within the framework of the Pyrenean defense, an entrenched camp around Oiartzun.

The concept of entrenched field replaced the defensive system based on Strong Plazas, obsolete due to the generalization of new war techniques, especially due to the greater range and accuracy of shooting provided by the striped-bore artillery.

An entrenched field can be defined as a set of permanent artillery (forts) fortifications located at certain prominent points in a territory, flanking each other and supporting evolving military personnel in their vicinity. In other words, the fortress square has been replaced by a more or less extensive territory that serves as a barrier to a possible invasion…"
