"The Battle of the Jarama preluded a hard, long, stubborn and fratricidal war

The Battle of Jarama, which took place between February 6 and 28, 1937, was the result of the offensive of the rebel side to close the communications of the besieged Madrid with the rest of the republican zone. The rebel forces were to cut the Valencia highway through Arganda del Rey and advance to Alcalá de Henares, towards the Barcelona highway.

The first phase of the operation consisted of reaching the line of the Jarama river, an objective that was achieved in just four days. In the second phase they had to take the towns of Arganda del Rey and Morata de Tajuña, into the hands of the republic, but they did not succeed…"
