On this day in 1863, Captain Jean Danjou and the 3rd Company, 1st Battalion, Foreign Regiment (aka: the French Foreign Legion) fought its most famous battle in Camerone, Mexico. As the plaque later placed there to commemorate their actions says:

Opposed to an entire army
Its mass crushed them
Life rather than courage
Abandoned these French soldiers
In Camerone on April 30, 1863.

Vive la Legion.

A period I have always intended to get into

Reads like a modern day Thermopylae! Heroes all, despite the cause!
