"Few Americans are aware of Hispanics fighting for the United States before there was a United States. In 1779, 220 of Hispanics reached what is now St. Louis before 1200 Brits and Indian allies did -- defeated the enemy and chased them back to Canada. That was followed by brilliant and strategic victories at Baton Rouge, Mobile Bay, the Bahamas and the Mother of all Battles at Pensacola where 1400 Mexicans, Cubans, Spanish and Puerto Rican soldiers defeated the largest British fortress on the Gulf of Mexico. General Bernardo Galvez took 45 ships with men to Yorktown where he placed them under the command of General George Washington. In New Mexico 4000 Mexican Americans volunteered for Civil War Union forces. They were led by Colonel Miguel Pino. The Battle of Puebla certainly helped Mexican morale but it really overstates the case that it affected the Civil War. If you are interested in learning about Mexicans in the Civil War I recommend "The Civil War in the American West" by Alvin Josephy or "The Battle of Glorietta" by Don Alberts. |

Another desperate effort to beat history into submission. I wish people advocating particular policies would simply advocate for those policies. Using historical examples to consider the wisdom of this or that contemporary measure has some merit. Re-writing history like this has none. |

The Spanish Empire's contribution to the AWI outcome is underappreciated in the U.S. Hispanic soldiers fought on both sides in the ACW. I doubt that Grant capturing Vicksburg had much impact on the military supply situation of the Confederacy east of the Mississippi. |
