I recently sprang for All Access CBS so I could see the intriguing Picard series.

Today I tried watching Episode 1 of Discovery and pulled the plug about halfway thru because it was…

!!!AWFUL!!!

Yet another iteration of Klingons.
Wildly unprofessional Starfleet officers.
Implausible actions.
Dialogue more befitting a 12 year old's fanfic.

I read up on it, and the consensus was that it got better by episode 3.

For those who have watched it, is it worth toughing thru?

It's not like I dont have the time, but…woof!

It's a big mix of good and bad. In season one, nearly all the characters are unlikable and unprofessional. Frankly season 2 is better, but still a mixed bag and drops nearly all of the important plot points of season one with no real discussion. The overall story arc is really dumb, and they add some really 'magic' and 'handwavium' things to the Trek canon. The season two climax is terrible, but you get to meet the original pilot Trek crew in their new guise, and Pike, Number One and emo Spock make up for a lot of the bad.

Frankly they should have made it a new sci fi series that had nothing to do with Trek and it would be somewhat more palatable, but as Star Trek it feels like something Gene Roddenberry would have been very angry about.

I heard a rumor there will be another Trek movie with Number 1 being played by Jennifer Lawrence.

I shall retire to Bedlam.

Seen Winter's Bone? Jennifer Lawrence could pull off just about anything.

CBS wants to make Star Trek money but not have to do Star Trek. They want it to as popular with a new audience as the original series was with its fans. The executives at CBS truly have no clue as to what makes the show, nor do they really care.

My wife (a die-hard Trekkie) and I watched episode 1 when CBS aired it for free back when the series started. We were not impressed, and we did not subscribe to CBS All Access.

They should have hired the team that did the well produced fanfim "Prelude to Axanar" set during the Klingon-Federation War. The production tapped writers with experience from past Trek shows, plus some actors you'll recognize from past Trek shows as well. CBS sued to stop their follow-up production of a feature length movie, instead confining them to two 15min shorts…hopefully coming out this year. Waaaayyy better than ST:D and ST:P on a fraction of the budget.

Best line in the Axanar intro…

The Andorrians have a saying, "dont push the pink skins to the thin ice.

Sort of a 24th century dont tread on me.

Discover gets better, it's just that the first episode is so clunky it's painful to watch.

Writing modern Trek is very easy, you just throw the switches and randomly change the parameters to get a certain emotional result.

Step one : The Wise Federation

You show how the captain does the right thing by doing a little hop over the stoopid Prime Directive.

Step two : The oblivious peacenik Federation

You then show how the starship blunders into an obvious trap where any other captain would have gone "yellow alert", but this is the Federation, they come in peace so nothing in the universe may want to harm them right ?

Step three : Where is Barney Greenwald when you need him ?

A courtroom scene expedited so quickly you wonder if the Federation has any competent lawyers around. See also the side note "Vulcans are evil bastards who don't share."

Step four : My name is a kill trigger !

So my little oblivious peaceniks, meet bloodthirsty spitefulness.

Step five : Hey we are Starfleet, f-bomb yeah !!!

Nothing has importance, nothing has consequence, but we're in complete denial of our dysfunctional irrational behaviour. No wonder the Vulcans don't talk to us …

It gets better. Don't expect much and you will be happy.

Wait until you get to the episode where they introduce the "spore drive". I nearly through a brick at the TV.

The Battle Fleet Gothic Klingon ships are terrible. The actual Klingons look like what happens when a Gorn and Klingon have a wild drunken night and forget to use contraception.

The design of the Starship Discovery is ridiculous, but I like most of the other Federation ships.

I wonder if the Chinese decided to send tartegrades to the moon because of Discovery.

If the moon turns out to be a warp portal,…
