I've got round to painting 4 x Merchantmen from the old Skytrex Coastal Forces range, now held by Heroics & Ros.

Constructive criticism welcome.

A couple of pictures here & more on my Blog if fancy a look. adierussell.blogspot.com

Sorry can't comment on your blog – No Google Account, No Comment, but…
A couple of techniques that work well for me are black-washing with thinned Tamiya Smoke – this does mean you need to paint in fairly light / bright tones as the wash will knock it back a bit but it does pick out detail if it's there in the kits. I also texture my bases with some quick dry Araldite into which I tease bow waves and a wake with a cocktail stick before it dries but is still soft enough to relax a bit to stop any roughness / stringing. I have to own up that mostly my fleets are 1:2400 so it's more affordable that way and harder to paint detail – hence the use of the wash but I have also used the wash technique on my 1:1200 kits.

Those look good! All you need is some Schnellbooten to torpedo them!

Lovely!

Only thing I would add is more rust…

BillyNM – thanks, I will try using a dark wash over lighter colours next time I paint some.

Herkybird – on my list of things to do as I have a few in the pile of shame.

epturner – good point, well presented. No ship lasts long at sea without getting a little rusty so I will have to search for some techniques to add it.

Hi, as for rust, I cannot recommend enough GW Technical paints like Typhus Corrosion for this kind of thing!
