I need a little help: I need to compare the size of these figures (even if some of them) with the Wargs of the Dark Alliance but, I don't have the wargs. Please if any of you can do it (and take some pictures) it would be of great help. I want to mount some eM4 figures and the cheapest way would be to use those wargs. GW's goblin wolf is doing well, but it wouldn't be cheap. Suggestions are welcome and thanks in advance

Dark Alliance are 1/72. EM4 are not. Big difference in my eye. Grimm |

Are you aware of the Oathmark hard plastic wolfriders? link |

Thank you very much to all for your kind help. Sgt.Slag: your image is great! Using the rule you include and comparing the GW wolf with your wargs, it seems their sizes are equal (at least in this dimension) It is up to see in the oder one. Grimmar: yes, they are in different scales but, eM4 are of the same high of a 1/72 infantrymen and Dark Alliance Wargs are chunky so, it could work. Earl of the North: yes, I know those figures, they are realy wonderfull but, if my idea work, it will be cheaper, solve both factions (dwarves and orcs) and the resulting miniature will be more robust. Thanks again gentlemen. |

Sgt Slag: on regard of Dark Alliance miniatures, I confess I am tempted about starting a 1/72 Fantasy project with them, I think they have many things to offer: the range is wide (and expanding) they are cheap, light and very resistent (I am concerned about the resistance of multi-part plastic figures). |

If you are concerned about Warg Riders coming off of their Wargs, you could try pinning them, with a small wire. I have not finished painting my riders, yet, so I have not tried gluing them into their saddles. My plan is to use E6000 glue, and handle them by the Warg, not the rider. Time will tell. I hope to finish painting the riders this Summer -- they've been in their present, 60%-completed state, for several years, now. I need to get them done, and on the table. They have plenty of enemies to slaughter. To date, my Goblin Army has always lost every battle. They now number around 120 figures, so with the new Warg Riders, they should number around 150 -- hopefully, the numbers increase will tip the scale in their favor?… Cheers! |

Sgt Slag: Your idea of fixing the rider to the warg with a piece of wire is very good, it will make them inseparable. I hope your goblin riders meet your expectations, they look quite fierce. Do you have 1/72 plastic Fantasy armies? I would love to see some photos if possible. Have you posted images of them anywhere? Is there somewhere where I can see them? |

I have Orcs in the paint queue. I have around 150 Goblins, ready for the tabletop. I used some toy bats, to make aerial cavalry for the Goblins, to try and beef up the army. I am in the process of updating the toy bats (terrible, really) with Schleich Fruit Bats (superb -- no painting required!). I took some of the Caesar Goblins, hurling Molotov Cocktails, cutting them off of their molded bases, and gluing them on the necks of the Fruit Bats. I Hot Glued some long, quilting pins, onto 2"-squares of MDF, with the point up. I bent the shaft, 90-degrees, and I push the sharp point into the vinyl Bat's belly: this allows me to bank the Bats at any angle, while they 'fly' above the bases. I played one game with the crappy bats, and it was quite a sight to see them swarming over a Human army! Everyone thought they were fantastic. Really looking forward to playing with the new Fruit Bat mounts for them, as they are sooo much better looking! I also used some Caesar Goblin Spearmen, as riders for some old Prince August Wolf mounts I cast up, around 20 years ago: Link0. I will use the lead, Wolf Cavalry figures as Light Cavalry, and the Warg Riders as Medium Cavalry for the Goblins. They will all look really fun, IMO. Goblin Infantry, painted brick red, per the 1977 AD&D Monster Manual description given by Gygax: Link1, Link2. Aerial Bat Cavalry for Goblins: Link 3, Link4, Link5, Link7. I bought a set of Caesar Elves, which I am painting up as Drow, with charcoal-gray colored skin. I cut off two female Mages, at the waist, and I glued them atop a couple of plastic spiders, to make Driders: Link8, Link9, Link10. They turned out good enough for my table. ;-) They were also a lot of fun to make: fast, simple, and effective. I played with these in a 2e BattleSystem Skirmish game (mini's skirmish game, with a thin veneer of RPG over the top; grossly simplified combat -- fast, and deadly, even for high level characters!). I use 1/72 fantasy figures as they match up with Gygax's descriptions for proper heights, next to 25mm-28mm Humans, per the 1977 Monster Manual descriptions. For my games, they are 25mm 'scale' miniatures, which is truly 1/72 scale (6 feet translates to 1 inch, in 1/72 scale). Gygax had Goblins, and Elves, shorter than Humans, so I am carefully using figures which are as close to Gygax's sizes, for 1/72 scale figures, as possible. It is not easy to find appropriate figure sizes, though. Gygax made Gnomes around 1-2 feet shorter than Dwarves (3-4 feet tall!): Link11. My Gnome Army figures are closer to Dwarf sizes, than Gnomes, and they are the official AD&D Gnomes, produced by Ral Partha, under license, back in the early 1990's. I think 15mm Dwarves would actually be closer to the size I desire, but I already have 50+ Gnomes, painted, based, and bloodied on the gaming table. Too late for them, unfortunately. Back in the early 1970's, Gygax and friends mixed different scales of miniatures to create their concept of the various fantasy races -- companies were not yet producing race-specific miniatures for all the various fantasy races. The players had to improvise. I am retracing some of their steps, around 50 years later. It is a lot of fun, and it is a bit of a challenge. The reward is that I get to see things as Gygax and company, saw them. That is quite a fun experience. Cheers! |

Sgt Slag: Thank you very much for the photos and the detailed description of the criteria you have followed to build your armies, they look really great! Your approach to the Hobbie seems very interesting, unique and personal to me. It is very nice and inspiring to see that someone follows their own ideas. I hope we meet again in this forum or another, in the meantime, I hope you continue well. Cheers! |
