I painted up a special figure the other day. Dale Dye who became famous for his work in Hollywood epics such as Platoon, Saving Private Ryan, Band of Brothers and Last of the Mohicans etc. See the camera and the attached film boxes round his neck and the cigarette in his left hand.

What detail. Is that a zip fastener down the front of his flak jacket? Not just the links, they even have "teeth"!

Those film canisters. I still have several saved from decades ago. Coin holders, small model parts, soil samples from various battlefields for basing……. Makes me laugh to think of carrying 35mm Kodak carousels and over 3,000 transparencies to Malaysia…as carry on baggage. Whole lot would now fit on one small memory stick in my pocket.

Well that one is a "Must-Have" for me! Probably no relation but need to have one anyway because the name is sooooo cool!
(Smiley face here….)

What a figure and paint job! That is just great. I am envious of all you guys doing those awesome 28s. Sadly, all I had to work with for my Vietnam stuff was 20mm. Captain Dye definitely needed a figure to honor his service.
Tom, that was just wonderful.

Superb, not sure I totally agree with his directions on the ww2 stuff. A little Vietnamish in SPR particularly but also in bob and Pacific. But a guy that has done quite a bit to help the look and feel of movies.

That is an interesting comment. Had never really thought about it, but set me thinking and now intrigued. Tell us more, please?

The language is one that is often commented on, they talk more like Vietnam grunts than WW2 GIs.
I've seen some comment on the overly complex hand signals used in SPR.

Nice one.

Yes, the waving hands around about the composition of the SS unit approaching the town. Never thought of that!

Good point about the occifer/other ranks relationships.

I will watch it again now to spot similar glitches and anachronisms. Nice one!

Awesome work!!! Thanks for sharing!

I am still waiting for Dale Dye's film about the bridge at La Fiere – the prototype for the bridge in SPR.

Technical advisors only get to advise and are usually ignored. Heaps of errors in SPR, BoB [The Pacific I never watched all the way thru].

When Dye has more control we'll see what he can really do.

I love special character figures, especially in 28mm. They really make scenarios come to life!

Great looking fig. Saw pic of him in Keith Nolan;s book on Hue when Dye was a USMC photographer. IIRc he carried a Thompson SMG and had a shootout with a VC in a church--will have to find that passage again.

Well never heard that they talked more like Vietnam Grunts than WWII. But I was not in either war so …

Regardless, Hand & Arm Signals was not a new idea. They may of used some in WWII and a Ranger unit is generally better trained than a regular line unit. But again I was not there …

Found this on the web …

Unfortunately, the hand signals used extensively in Band of
Brothers and SPR are from the Vietnam era, not WW2. Dale Dye, the
military consultant who is from the Vietnam era USMC, likes to use
them. The WW2 era hand signals were much simpler:

Both links don't work though.frown But as pointed out WWII Hand signals were much simpler. So as I thought they were used in WWII by the US ARMY. It is not a new concept … But like everything as time went of they became less simpler and more detailed.

Of course we used them when I was on Active Duty '79-'90, and before in ROTC, '75-'79. On a few occasions was corrected by a senior NCO if I was doing them incorrectly … huh? Rare but it happened … evil grin

"Damned occifers !"

They swear way to much.
The average GI didn't swear nearly as much.
A few individual's might be particularly potty mouthed, but in SPR and BOB/Pacific everyone talks like they're in Platoon.

The swearing has been commented on by the Easy company veterans, several of them wrote books after the success of the series and when they commented on the series, they liked it. But a few did write that they didn't swear as much as in the series.
