Which are you best at?

von Schwartz20 Apr 2020 12:43 p.m. PST

Painter, not that good but I really suck at playing.

Personal logo Herkybird Supporting Member of TMP20 Apr 2020 12:53 p.m. PST

Welllll, I enjoy playing! – Painting is little more than a means to an end…

Frederick Supporting Member of TMP20 Apr 2020 1:14 p.m. PST

I am probably a better painter than a player – mostly 'cause I probably paint 10 hours for every one that I game

Huscarle20 Apr 2020 1:17 p.m. PST

Jack-of-all-Trades – and a matter of opinion as to how good or bad I am grin

mumbasa20 Apr 2020 1:19 p.m. PST

I agree with Herkybird. I love to game, not so much to paint.

Player, as I really dislike painting.

After all, it is called wargaming, not warpainting. grin

Gear Pilot20 Apr 2020 1:40 p.m. PST

Hard for me to say, but I do paint more that I get to play.

Personal logo Sgt Slag Supporting Member of TMP20 Apr 2020 1:49 p.m. PST

+2 to Herkybird: I prefer to game, far more than I enjoy painting. Painting is more a chore, than a pleasure, for me. Cheers!

Timmo uk20 Apr 2020 2:01 p.m. PST

I paint far more than I play but I'm not sure I'd claim to be good at either.

advocate20 Apr 2020 2:14 p.m. PST

At the moment, I'm a painter. But I only do it with the intention of playing.

Prince Rupert of the Rhine20 Apr 2020 2:17 p.m. PST

I paint way more than I play. I enjoy playing but its all about the look I want great minis on great terrain. In the end If I'm honest I enjoy the hours I spend modelling and painting far more than I enjoy playing.

Florida Tory20 Apr 2020 2:38 p.m. PST

I am a gamer. Painting is a separate hobby.

Doug MSC Supporting Member of TMP20 Apr 2020 2:53 p.m. PST

I enjoy both equally.

Redcurrant20 Apr 2020 3:14 p.m. PST

Neither, I am more of a collector as I dont paint my own figures, and only play about once a month (and that was in pre-lockdown era).

Hlaven20 Apr 2020 3:23 p.m. PST

Painter. Game only a couple times a year.

Oberlindes Sol LIC Supporting Member of TMP20 Apr 2020 4:34 p.m. PST

I love both painting and playing, but I'm more skilled a painter than a player.

I'm good referee and scenario developer and writer, too, which is close to playing.

Rich Bliss20 Apr 2020 5:38 p.m. PST

Gamer first..painter more now that I;m retired .trying not buy and paint what I have…Damn Perry;s (LOL)

ZULUPAUL Supporting Member of TMP20 Apr 2020 6:15 p.m. PST

Not that great a painter but it has been over a year since I played a game so I guess I'm a better painter.

Not comparable scales.

Are you a better dancer or cook?

Syrinx020 Apr 2020 8:01 p.m. PST

I enjoy both equally. My level of competence in either is subjective and varies no doubt by game.

I paint way more than play. I really enjoy the friendships and social aspects but if it didn't appeal visually, I'd do all my gaming on PC.

79thPA Supporting Member of TMP21 Apr 2020 3:44 a.m. PST

I don't care for most painting. If I could afford to send everything off to be painted, I would in a heartbeat.

Thomas O21 Apr 2020 6:36 a.m. PST

I consider myself a pretty good painter, and have had several compliments about my painting. I like to game, but I tend to loose more often than win. Seems the dice gods are not on my side especially when it comes to moral checks! I enjoy both aspects of the hobby.

Personal logo Legion 4 Supporting Member of TMP In the TMP Dawghouse21 Apr 2020 9:27 a.m. PST

I only paint now … must finish all my stuff before I get recalled to the Mother Ship … old fart But I think I am a "pretty good" painter as well as the same as a gamer. Did not lose a lot of games … But sometimes I remember gettnig my Bleeped text kicked … frown

Uesugi Kenshin Supporting Member of TMP21 Apr 2020 10:46 a.m. PST

Painter, my gaming is a social activity.

chuck05 Fezian21 Apr 2020 4:09 p.m. PST

Id like to do more of both. Right now I just seem to be a collector.

von Schwartz21 Apr 2020 7:01 p.m. PST

Frederick – only 10 to 1, I haven't had a game in the 10 years since I've moved, painted a helluva lot though, nearly have enough now to do full Prussian, Austrian, French, and Allies battles simultaneously.

Oberlindes Sol LIC Supporting Member of TMP21 Apr 2020 8:00 p.m. PST

Not comparable scales.

Are you a better dancer or cook?

I am a way better cook than dancer. Everybody loves my cooking. On the other hand, only my wife can tolerate dancing with me.

evilgong21 Apr 2020 11:30 p.m. PST

If there was no game, would I be painting these figs?

Probably not, I guess I might be building plastic kits.

UshCha22 Apr 2020 10:57 a.m. PST

Gamer, scenario writer and rules author as none of the rules available meet my stringent requirements.

At best I color figures and hate it as it wastes gaming time, sometimes I think coloring overdoing it.

Personal logo Legion 4 Supporting Member of TMP In the TMP Dawghouse22 Apr 2020 2:39 p.m. PST

Even though a game with minis and terrain is very eye-catching. A board game with counters is really much more "efficient" overall. If all you want to do is fight or re-fight a battle, etc., IMO …

Personal logo etotheipi Sponsoring Member of TMP22 Apr 2020 5:04 p.m. PST

A board game with counters is really much more "efficient" overall.

Most of the time.

Depends on the game. QILS uses 3D aspects of terrain and figures to avoid keeping dozens of stats and using dozens of tables and equations to calculate complex things like footing and line of sight.

USAFpilot22 Apr 2020 6:12 p.m. PST

I greatly admire well painted figures, but alas I don't have the talent.

I'm a gamer.

Uparmored23 Apr 2020 4:52 a.m. PST

I'm more of a converter. The hours I spend hacking and epoxying figures is greater than the time spent painting or gaming. I definitely want my guys to look like I want em to look. But I see it as a project with an ending. ie when I convert and paint everything then I'll just be a gamer because I'll have the playset.

I'm planning a game for early January 2021 in 20 mm probably with Battlegroup rules, Cold War mod from Cold War Hot blog. 2020 is just continuing to build my playset (started 20mm in 2017?) and learning the rules, plotting out the campaign and writing up the units.

Personal logo Legion 4 Supporting Member of TMP In the TMP Dawghouse23 Apr 2020 8:03 a.m. PST

Most of the time.
Of course but in almost all situations. E.g. Playing/fighting a Company or even Bn level game with counters and game board is a lot faster and easier. E.g. AH's Squad Leader, SPI's Kampfpanzer, etc., etc.

UshCha23 Apr 2020 9:03 a.m. PST

Legion 4, to me board games don't cut it. I need a 3D representation of terrain to see dead ground, low hills that provide a visibility advantage and to see how high a hedge or wall is. If you really don't care about such things or are so expert at visualizing complex 3D situations from contours alone you could be right: but I'm not so, I have to use figures.

Personal logo etotheipi Sponsoring Member of TMP23 Apr 2020 10:55 a.m. PST

Of course but in almost all situations.

I agree with your point. And I love counter and hex games.

I play a lot of modern and scifi skirmish. Things like where on a rooftop can I get line of fire to X, but have cover from Y shooting at me come up all the time in those games.

visualizing complex 3D situations from contours alone

That's pretty much how modern warfare commanders with a COP do it.

Don't get me wrong I love minis. But games like I said, Squad Leader, Kampfpanzer, etc. are pretty good at doing what a board wargame is supposed to be.

I having played wargames both board and minis since the '60s. As well as my decade + as an Infantry Officer in various environments. I can pretty much look at a map and have a pretty good idea how the terrain lays, etc. Of course nothing beats an on the ground recon. But in many cases you don't have time to do that.

Jeffers24 Apr 2020 3:33 a.m. PST

Painter because I couldn't give a monkey's about playing. I painted toy soldiers long before I rolled dice for them.
