Just finishing up some SYW French artillery and while I know what the "uniform" is supposed to look like these guys appear to be in shirt sleeves, long sleeves BTW, and possibly a waistcoat. Would they just have a white or light grey undershirt and would they still have their waistcoats on?

I have SYW Prussian artillerymen sans coats but in waistcoats with shirt sleeves rolled up.

It would not surprise me if artillery crew stripped bare chested to alleviate the discomfort of working the guns on a hot day (naval gunners certainly did) but the convention has them in coats or, at most, in waistcoat & shirt sleeves.

I think the bottom line is do what pleases you. If you find half-naked figures to crew your guns & anyone protests, simply tell them to show proof that this never happened.

IIRC waistcoats in this period have sleeves and indeed are quite long coming some way below the waist. If that is what hey are wearing then I think French artillery would be all in red, see:

Thank you both, BTW BillyNM, kronoskaf is my go-to for uniform info but thank you for your input, I may need to repaint some newly acquired artillerists.

French or Russian uniforms come to mind as both had long sleeved waistcoats.

OK, OK I'll repaint them!! (smile)

1 little tiny thing…white gaiters?

French military uniforms for both the F&I and AWI periods had sleeved waistcoats.

I do have a bunch in full uniform coat but for some reason I gave them black gaiters. Well, that's some more quarantine work for me, except, I'm not in quarantine, being an Essential Critical Infrastructure Worker does have its downsides.

Gotta admit it, the all red uniform looks pretty cool and I'm not even done with the shading and contrast painting.
