Any tips for how to paint (or not to paint) modern handguns, rifles, etc.? What are the common mistakes gamers make, in your opinion?

I know a guy that paints them up way too silver, the idea is black with a verrrrry light drybrush on the metal parts.

I'd say pink, but that's available for the "little ladies".
