The problem is "panic". If you are being hit by a hurricane or a massive snow storm then sales and TRANSPORTATION will be affected. Then stocking up on consumables (like toilet paper) is a great idea. The problems is that although disruption of stores will happen the transportation network is only having a minor disruption in the pandemic so most consumable products will not be affected. But in panic mode the herd (those in panic mode) goes and buys what they think will disappear. In my case I have always stocked up on consumables so gave nine rolls (had accidentally bought single ply which I don't like) of toilet paper to a friend and had 44 rolls still left (about 2 months ago bought a package of 32 rolls of 2 ply I hadn't opened yet). I guess I have cornered the toilet paper market. |

Growing up overseas with my family in the military, a once a month visit to the PX was standard. Still shop that way, so in effect I'm always "hording" in effect. |

Reminds me of a toilet paper crises I experienced in 1970. The U.S. Navy submarine rescue ship on which I served (a 200-foot converted ocean-going tug) rode out a typhoon in the East China Sea for several days. Unfortunately, the supply of paper in the heads ran short. More was available in the forward hold, but the hold could only be entered from the main deck. Waves were continually crashing over the bow, and as a result, the main deck was off limits. The "important papers" were near, but oh so far. Fortunately for me, I worked in the radio shack, and learned that crumpled-up and softened teletype paper could make due in a pinch. When my secret got out I was soon the most popular man in the crew! |
