…The Cold War.

"America drew up plans to invade Britain during the Cold War in case England became part of the Soviet Union, documents have revealed.

US generals feared the 'Reds' would themselves invade the UK and insisted the Admiralty help them prepare a counter-offensive.

In August 1946, British secret service bosses received a request from the US Chief of Naval Operations for a topographical survey of Britain's coastline and beaches…"

So, actually, to reinforce Britain… grin

Yes, that is one of the things Pentagon military planners do: draw up secret plans to invade countries. Glad they were on top of it. :-)

I'm willing to bet than when all the information comes out, this will turn out to be another War College student exercise, like the 'tween-the-wars war plan against Canada. And consider the source – the Daily Mail is Britain's answer to the Midnight Enquirer.

Uncle Sam has contingency plans for just about every situation. Most of them don't see the light of day, gathering dust in top secret archives for decades until some bureaucrat with enough authority decides they can be declassified.

Non-story really. The purpose of military staffs and planners are to plan for any eventually; they were just doing their job.

Before WW2 we had the rainbow 15 plan. Plan Red was war with the UK. Plan Black was war with Germany. Plan Green was war with Mexico. Plan Orange was war with Japan. There were other plans which had their colors. Planing for a hypothetical war gives your planners something to do to keep their skills up and keeps them busy. By the way, England also had a plan in case they went to war with the US.

Even if "no plan survives first contact with the enemy"?

Even if "no plan survives first contact with the enemy"?

Nobody without a plan survives contact with the enemy.

Every plan must include contingency plans for when things don't go quite as planned, and discretionary reserves for when things really hit the fan.

They were getting ready just in case GB was invaded by alien tripods from Mars.

Only if we "reinforced" France on June 6, 1944.

My dad told me that when he was in the Corps they'd make plans for the invasion of Mississibama. It was a wargame they played using Virginia/North Carolina as one side and Mississippi/Alabama as the other. I'm fairly certain the chance of an actual invasion of Alabama was slim.

"I'm fairly certain the chance of an actual invasion of Alabama was slim".

I don't see why not. If the Russians can invade Georgia, then surely VA and NC can invade Mississibama. ;-)

I'm willing to bet there's one for Washington D.C. too, if things get too dire there.

The US has OPLANs for all sort of events, e.g. invading Canada(again !) Alien contact/landing on WH lawn, etc., etc., …

emckinney14 Apr 2020 3:52 p.m. PST

With the COVID-19 hospitalization rate in Mississippi, no one's invading without full NBC suits. And that's about to become unbearable with the temperature hitting 80F.

Well, if the rumors come true, they might actually have to do that, AND/OR at least call out the National Guard in each state in order to maintain order, if the distribution of food, money, and other critical supplies break down soon.

My guess is masks, if not full NBC gear will be worn, regardless of the temps, though I get the 80 degree issue, combined with the humidity down there. It will be miserable, difficult work.

Yeah we wore our MOPP gear in many climates. They are hot and become uncomfortable very quickly … frown Especially in the humid South or of course the desert. Fortunately we never had to wear MOPP in Panama.

gamershs15 Apr 2020 12:52 p.m. PST

It was bad enough wearing gas masks in Fort Sill in the summer for training. The full NBC suit must have been a horror in hot (humid?) weather.

Uparmored16 Apr 2020 3:02 a.m. PST

US troops fought in MOPP just fine in Iraq. But I guess they were very mechanised.

I always heard during the Cold War, where both sides might employ NBC warfare, one reason Australia's North was uninvadable was because enemy troops couldn't survive in MOPP in our heat, but I'm sure Iraq's heat compares..

Personal logo Legion 4 Supporting Member of TMP16 Apr 2020 8:57 a.m. PST

Yes they did just fine. As they saw Chem attacks were not likely they dropped the level to only carrying MOPP.

Having worn it in the Mojave a couple of times, it was not a lot of fun …

And yes, US forces are very mobile, with tracked & wheeled AFVs, trucks, helicopters, etc. But still the Grunts had to do some dismounted movements at times. But in the desert you want to have mobility. Walking long distances is not your first choice if at all. The battlefield today moves very quickly.

We in the 101, 82d and other Light Infantry units were trained to ride on the backs of Tanks, APCs, etc. If need be once we were are on the ground. And with the Army introducing the Strykers, an Infantry Carrying Vehicle, which is basically an armored truck. Plus a number of armed versions for support. They saw the need to move Infantry quickly into the battlefield with transport and support.
