This is well-known footage but the poster has managed a good blow-by-blow and almost frame-by-frame in key areas. A Panther tank hits a U.S. Sherman, killing or mortally wounding three crew. A then-new M26 Pershing makes a flank approach, catches the Panther broadside-on and puts two or three shot into it. The crew bail out and the flames roaring up inside the tank can then be seen through the shot holes. YouTube link Well worth a watch. Barry |

You can read about this battle from the perspective of the M26 gunner (and a German crew member of a Panzer IV) in the fantastic book Spearhead. link |

Fantastic sequence. Shown here before in an earlier posting, but this uses modern processing to enhance the images…to incredible effect. I never noticed the Sherman Commander was short of a leg and the text says he did not survive that. Amazing how the Panther Crew got out of a vehicle that was not that easy to exit by all accounts! Huge improvement on the original. |

Very well colourised, superbly actually. The frame rate is the modern "smooth" look which I find very disturbing and they do not realise that the tarpaulin over the rear stowage on any AFV is an aerial recognition banner, in orange or a pinkish colour. The attack on the Panther is just a fragment of the original and that surprised me. Controversial, but looks genuine to me and surely the best sequence of the entire battle. Thr tank CO minus one leg did not make it by all accounts, which does surprise me. OK, maybe not his only wound, I guess. |

On the one hand, one can say that a Sherman would have done just as well in the case at hand -- a shot into a Panther's flank, into the upper hull sponson just below the turret, would have penetrated as easily if it was a US 76mm or even 75mm gun. And even the new much-vaunted Pershing would not have done well if hit by a Panther's 75mm at 60yds range. On the other hand, as I have more recently read, the Panther's gunner (or commander?) may have hesitated on firing at the Pershing, as it was not a tank they had ever seen before and they were unsure of their target. If you watch the video you will see that the Panther's gun was pretty much lined up on the Pershing when the Pershing fired. Getting the first shot is an important factor in any such engagement. |
